A question about : Worth upgrading from xbox 360 to xbox one yet?

My son has started suggesting an xbox One for Christmas. I'm not keen as I think they are still pretty pricey and the games are expensive as well. Plus he has an xbox 360 and plenty of games for it - and most of his friends have the 360 as well.

However, I am not a gamer and could do with a more objective viewpoint. Is it worth getting the xbox one at the moment or would we be better to wait until his birthday next year perhaps?

Best answers:

  • There are not many games out there that are exclusive for the Xbox One/PS4 as there are games coming out for 360/PS3 (for me anyway).
I plan on moving June 2nd for Arkham Knight.
  • The simplest way to decide that is to ask other parents - if the rest of them are going to upgrade now then it's worthwhile, if not then there's still a bit of legroom to play with 360.
Last thing you want is your Son to be the billy no mates playing one while everyone else is playing the other!
  • I bought the xbox one the day it came out, it is great!
Like you say there is not a huge number of games, it would depend what king of games he plays.
If you let me know, I could give a better recommendation of whether it is worth it or not.
If he just plays something like FIFA prob not worth it, but games like battlefield, titanfall, Need for speed they are so much better on the one.
  • To take full advantage, then he needs to have a full HD 1080P television to play it on. Personally, I think the xbox one is great and has improved massively over the last year as MS have been doing monthly updates on it. The price of games isn't vastly different between both, especially if he can wait a few weeks.
One major plus is digital game sharing, which would allow him and a friend to share their digital download games between both consoles. You will find out how if you google that but very easy to setup.
  • No, the Xbox One only has a couple of decent racing games as exclusives at present. There are cheaper options for all other new-gen games and the 360->One leap from 720P to 900P isn't particularly great.
As this is MSE, it's also worth considering the long-term costs of paying Ј30-40 for new games and Ј30 every year for playing online. There are significant savings to be made by either sticking with the 360 or leapfrogging the Xbox One entirely with a better system today.
  • I'm struggling to get this, but saving Ј30 a year is not going to happen if you stick with 360 as you'll still need to spend that Ј30 a year to play online surely? You'll save short term with the games (well, some of them!) but ultimately the only saving you'll make will be from the initial cost of the system, which at this point in time is actually fairly reasonable. (Going by the fact if I was to buy one today I'd go with a bundle in Game with FIFA, Forza 5 & GTA for under Ј350 according to their poster)
Not saying you don't have a point about the money implications, but ultimately you've raised a bit of a non-point with regards to paying to play online. Even if the barb at the end was a precurser to Playstation it wouldn't make any sense as it too holds a subscription cost of Ј30-40 depending on where you go annually.
  • I'm sorry, I don't see what's difficult to understand. I suggested being aware of the longer-term costs of console gaming and paying to play online.
I went on to say that there are significant savings to be made by either sticking to 360 (which obviously saves Ј300+ on new hardware) or moving to a system where you don't pay Ј30-40 per game and Ј30 just to play online (which obviously saves money in the long term (and equally obviously cannot be the PS4)).
I'm sorry if it wasn't obvious enough! Although if it doesn't make sense to you that Ј300 is a saving... could you spare Ј300, please? I'll put it to good use.
  • ASDA are doing a Black Friday deal on the Xbox One on Saturday (first come, first served sort of thing). Don't know how much they would be but worth considering

  • Errr... my initial post wasn't referring to your "subjective answer" at all. I was responding to the OP. I'm not sure why you think I was arguing with your post... ahhh, you have ifstar and captainhindsight on ignore? I see! No, I was just answering the OP's question. I understand your confusion now. (Although I still don't understand why you'd complain that Ј300 being "the only saving you'll make" means saving Ј300 is not worth it.)

  • I haven't been tempted by Sunset either, but IGN reviewers seem to love it, and I have a few friends who are really enjoying it aswell.
I think they have done a really good job of the movement and combat, so it's something I might revisit later on when I don't have so much to play, but at the end of the day not all games will appeal to all people.
Saying that, I get the impression they are shifting a lot of the Sunset bundles, but perhaps it's more to do with the white console than the game itself.
My biggest anticipated game now is The Division, but I'm really wary it's going to end up being a let down. I made the mistake of buying into the hype of Destiny, and whilst it's a beautiful game with really good mechanic, there simply isn't enough to do.
  • Yep. I'm wading through Halo MCC because I really enjoyed the campaigns, have a good friend base to play it with, and it's a LOT of content to get through.
I've got Forza Horizon 2 on the go aswell which is another massive game, and I still occasionally go back to Destiny for raids, but nowhere near as much as I used to. It's just a weekly 'going through the motions' on the raid, and I'm missing one piece of gear to hit level 30 and have energies and shards coming out of my ears, so have basically no motivation to do the daily/weekly grinds.
Can't bring myself to buy Destiny DLC as it seems way overpriced for a small amount of additional content, especially when the main game was already so bare. I heard they already announced a sequel in the works, but I'll definitely be giving that a miss.
I REALLY want Alien Isolation, but can't see me getting around to it any time before the New Year so will probably just hold out for a sale. Think I'm giving GTA V a miss. I replayed IV not long before it originally came out on 360 and think I burned out on it. Barely touched V on 360 and don't think I'm ready for it yet despite the XB1 version being seemingly vastly improved.
I don't think Division has a set date yet, just TBC 2015. I'd expect to see it before Summer though hopefully. Again, I think it needs a solid friend base to fully appreciate it, but I have a few friends who haven't yet upgraded and I think Division will be the game that finally brings my proper crowd to XB1. I really hope it isn't a let down.
  • I am buying my boys an Xbox one for Christmas and am seriously having trouble finding a good deal with the Kinect, do they need it?
They play alot of games online with friends, mainly Minecraft and Call of Duty.
Also if they have a Xbox 1 and a friend has a 360 can they still talk to each other? If the friend has Minecraft on 360, but my boys have a 1 can the boys still play with their friend?
Any help would be much appreciated
