A question about : Work and disabled?

I am disabled due to my health (neurological and epilepsy) and people can tell when they see me. I wish to work and sometimes I am lucky to get an interview but after that I am not successful. I am young and feeling depressed.

Simple questions – where do disabled people work? Are there any organisations that can help with employment?

Thank you

  • Hi,
It's late and you are depressed so I felt I had to reply to re-assure you that things can and do get better.
Disabled people work everywhere, they just aren't always visible. Many workplaces demand people with a variety of skills, some you will have, some you will need (and be able to)learn and some you maybe never will be able to have. please don't limit yourself to places you think disabled people work.
I am sure there are organisations that can help. your job centre will have a disability adviser, and a Google search may throw up all kinds of National and local organisations. The help you need may be to do with presentation or interview skills, or confidence building. I hope people more knowledge than me come on with more specifics,
You have skills that someone out there needs. You may have to work harder to find them but take heart they are out there!
When I say they about disabled people by the way I mean we. I guess I just don't think of myself as disabled and maybe that's no bad thing either.
    good luck!

  • have a look on nhs jobs in your area. also when looking for jobs good places are with the double tick for disability friendly. I tick I have disability so im garunteed an interview if I meet the essential criteria. Some places have this policy but the nhs def do
  • Thanks to those who replied
  • My daughter is disabled she is 23 her disability is mostly mobility. She got a apprentice job at a local housing association through shaw trust. She only gets paid Ј2.60 something an hour but also gets Ј100 tax credits so she earns just over Ј200 a week. Unfortunately she will be unemployed next month due to her 12 month contract ending and no hope of a job, as the HA just want more cheap labour.
She is very unhappy she is once again unemployed. She enjoyed her job and worked hard and didn't have any time off accept holidays. She was hoping they would take her on, but alas that's not to be.
Good luck with getting a job.
  • The job centre can, I believe refer you to EADS, which should provide an advisor who will promote disabled job seekers to appropriate employers.
Good luck and keep us posted please
  • I've previously worked with a variety of disabled people within housing associations, local government and what is now the DWP.
  • Lots of disabled staff in the Civil Service, although few jobs are now advertised externally and tend to be fixed term in junior grades.
  • I'm sorry you're feeling so down. It's a horrible place to be in, feeling like you'll never be able to get a job because of something that isn't your fault. All you need is that chance to show what you can do but it's like looking for a needle in a haystack.
I ended up struggling through an apprenticeship with the most ignorant man I've ever met. I don't know how somebody can be so understanding about mental illness but be horrific to people with physical disabilities. But anyway. That job gave me the skills to get a temporary job in a vairy naice department store which got me a job at a college. It's not a forever job but the people I work with are fantastic and I'm in a good position to work towards a better career. I love being in catering but I'm never going to be able to afford my own place.
Big companies who have enough employees for you to shuffle responsibilities around are amazing to work for. Smaller companies can also be good if you get somebody who understands that you treat everybody with the same respect but at the end of the day you do have to treat disabled people differently to ensure they can do their job. All I can suggest is that if you've tried getting into one career and you're being stone walled by people who can't see past your disability, maybe try starting further down and then reapplying once you have experience and references under your belt?
    Good luck with the future
