A question about : Wired Network, Best Router?

Mum & Dad have just got broadband today and as they have a computer and printer each they want them networked so both can be online at the one time if they so wish. What router would you recommend and where can you get it and all the leads required cheapest?

Mums computer and printer is in one room and Dads computer and printer is in another room. The router would be in Dads room as that is where the main phone socket is. They would need two 10m cables to take the router to Mums computer and printer and two 5m cables from the router to Dads computer and printer. There is a multifunctioner, OP 7210 which is at most 20m from the router is it possible to connect it in as well?

I was looking at another thread on this site which recommended AVG anti software but when I downloaded it it asked for a key/code, what have I done wrong because I am only used to working with Norton? Where can I get reliable software and how much would it cost?

Finally, how many computers can you install Norton on?

Looking forward to all the helpful responses as they would like the network up and runing on Thursday or Friday.

Best answers:

  • you dont even need a router!
just one single crossover cable is required.
    very cheap method.
only trouble is that dads puter must be on, for mothers puter to access the internet etc.
other way is to use a router either a wired one (single cable again) or a wireless one. with the router any puter can access the net at any time.
netgear 834 wireless router is highly recommended.

Recommend a wireless router (Netgear are good) which would save running a cable to the other room.

You wouldn't connect the printers to the router unless they are network printers.

AVG is excellent and free. You need to register with your email address, they send you the code via email then you copy and paste it in to the registration area. I wouldn't use Norton myself. Bad experiences....

  • you connect the first puter to the bb, with the usb modem supplied.
then you connect the 2 puters togerther with a crossover cat5 cable from lan port to lan port.
the 2 puters can now share everything. including the net.
the first puter needs to be on, otherwise the other puter cannot see it.
    hence cannot access the net.
  • A wireless router is neater and safer (provided that you encrypt it).
  • if you go down the netgear wireless router road, then you will also need a wireless card for the 2nd puter. assuming its a desktop pc and it hasnt got one?
most new lappys have them already built in.
  • the lan port is the local area network port.
its shaped rather like a large/ish telephone socket.
most puters for the last 6 ish yrs or so have one.
  • Internet Connection Sharing is a mess at the best of times.
A 2 or 4 port wired router (ADSL if it's phone line based broadband and not cable) would do the job and they are cheap as chips now since everyone's wanting wireless.
www.ebuyer.com you'll get a router and the required cabling there no problem.
  • the other great thing about router v crossover, is that the router (if it's ethernet, which is better than usb) stays on 24/7 and reconnects automatically if it does go offline. So your mum and dad would have no diffs about connecting, just switch on either or both pcs and you're online.

It looks more complicated than it is.. The essence is that you put a password on the router config screen, and tell that to the wireless PC, it can either be done using the installation CD, or by going to a web address in IE..
Wireless routers are wired as well, so you only need one wireless adapter for the remote PC
The advantage of a router over crossover, is that the built in NAT functionality acts as an excellent firewall. With Crossover, you are relying on windows software to protect you, a router lessens the load on the PC.
  • lan cards cost about a fiver from ebuyer.
