A question about : Winter Planting ideas

I will plant some garlic and broad beans shortly.

Any other ideas for indoor and outdoor veg/fruit planting at the moment?

Best answers:

  • Nope....but I'm hoping for more ideas myself.
You've reminded me that I have some broad bean seeds stuck away somewhere...wonder if its too late to plant them?
How long do they take from start to finish so to say? I'm guessing that just a few weeks later I'd have a crop for myself?
  • Each to their own but I think its a little too late for Autumn planting of borh garlic and broad beans. I always try to get them in in the last 2 weeks of October to give them time to get established before the cold weather arrives and growth stops.
If I occasionally can't manage this because of the weather I wait until mid January and start both off on the kitchen windowsill, harden them off then put them out in early March.
You don't lose much time doing this and in a normal year should be picking the broad beans by mid June.
When I start garlic off inside I plant the cloves in saved cardboard toilet tubes filled with compost. These can then be put directly into the ground with no root disturbance.
The only other things I have started off in the past couple of weeks are a pot of Basil and next years sweet peas. I have saved a few of this years early potatoes and will be putting these in bags in the greenhouse next week for an Easter crop if all goes well.
  • I haven't sown broad beans or onions at this time of year before but I did sow broad beans at the end of September this year and they are now about 3 inches high, I was led to believe that broad beans should be sown so that they were about 4 inches by Christmas and then they could overwinter during the worst of the weather to start growing again in the spring. I also planted Japanese onions which are all growing now and garlic at the end of October which isn't showing any growth yet but I heard that you can sow garlic on the shortest day December 21st to crop on the longest day June 21st.
