A question about : When opening a current account...

Hey everyone,
I have a question, aimed particularly at those who have several current accounts.

When opening a current account, and asked where else you have an account..
..do you normally give details of every account you have and where. Also, what about the various products you have with them?

Can they check to see whether you have any other accounts?

I was wondering whether having multiple current accounts (more than 1) at different banks/ BSs counts against you?

Thanks

Best answers:

  • Generally when opening accounts I'm honest with the bank......no reason to do anything else..they can try to sell me extras, doesn't mean I'll take them out...
  • But having several current accounts...can it be part of the reason for them not to allow you to open the new account with them?
  • I've read posts on here from MSEs having 15+ current accounts, so this should not be the case. I have decided to kep my first ever account open just for the cases when you need to give an 'existing account' on an application. I also believe the general view around here is that the current accounts are 'the door' the financial institutions use to sell other (more lucrative for them) financial products - therefore the freebies/cashbacks etc. Be careful though, if you have dents in your credit record - it could be totally different picture!
  • I have 3 current accounts!
1 Natwest Student account, for student loans money going in and purchases for uni and unexpected bills
1 Citibank Joint account, for household expenditure like mortgage etc
1 Citibank Sole account, for my own money after paying everything.
I have always been honest when opening an account, never had any problems and the banks have never questioned me about it!
  • I have 4 current accounts, with 4 different banks. When opening a new account, it will generally ask for your existing account details / an existing bank. I would only provide one of my existing accounts since there is only space on the form for one... and the one i provide would usually one which is included on my credit files (since the bank will see this when opening the account during credit search anyway - although it doesnt really matter - since i have done it both ways)... Two of my 4 current accounts are listed on my credit file, the other two arent even though i have a cheque card for each account.
Just be honest if they ask why.... Lloyds asked why i wasnt closing my Nationwide Flex when i got a lloyds current account... Halifax asked why i wasnt closing lloyds (or making use of transfer service) when i got halifax account. On both occasions a linked savings account would have made doing so very difficult...
  • I have only ever been asked for the details of one account when making applications. I have 12 current accounts at the moment and have never found a problem increasing that number... Of course if asked for the details of all accounts i would divulge them.
