A question about : What is the best Broadband deal?????

I'm looking to switch from dial up to Broadband.

Looking around there are many deals. !Some seem to mention a download limit some don't.

I feel the best offer is from Onetel. !What are your thoughts? :-/

I play online games, send photos, listen to the radio etc, I don't think 2GB is enough for that. !Is it???? ???

Thanks

Best answers:

  • Have a look at 'e7even', no download limits and 10 x dial-up speed.
  • It depends how much broadband speed you want...
I was with dial-up Telewest till April 2004. I was paying Ј13.99 per month, I switched to their 256K speed broadband for Ј17.99 per month....('free' modem, free instal)
For another Ј4 per month I am thoroughly enjoying broadband. Even at 256K instead of the popular 512K, I can still download 2 files at the same time and enjoy fast web surfing!
  • I assume you've read Martin's article on this.
I use Pipex 512 and have found it very reliable and at Ј23.44 / month cheaper than Virgin (also found it very good) Ј25 / month. As per the previous post, you need to decide what you will use BB for. There are much cheaper deals around which are capped (again read Martin's article as he points out loopholes).
Make sure your deal includes free modem, set up and you might be able to squeeze the first month free as well.
    Best of luck.
  • Thanks everyone for your thoughts.
I'm looking for a 512k connection and un capped.
    thanks
  • Ive just signed up with ntl today, you get 2 months free,300k connection speed 12 months free telephone line rental all for 17.99 they even let you keep the same no as before hope this helps
  • if you can, i would go for telewest. we got it for Ј24.99 a month for 512 K with free installation. also got another 20 quid because we threatened to leave telewest telephone for BT. they then upgraded it to 768K for free.
Telewest are probably not the cheapest around but the service is pretty good. the speed is consistently high and in 6 months i have not experienced any down time.
very reliable and good value in my opinion. but you need to have cable tv with them as well. the cheapest cable package is around 3.99 for some freeview channels and some other channels including E4 etc.

  • We are just in the process of moving from Freedom2Surf (great service, no problems), to Metronet ().
They have various levels of subscription, depending upon your usage. From what you've said, it sounds as though the 200MB download a month (512k) for Ј10 may be enough for you. If not, you can pay a bit more for more downloading.
1MB line is from just Ј14.26, and 2MB is from Ј16.80.
I would have thought this too good to be true, but have no need to be wary of poor service as a friend has been with them for a while now, and has had no problems. In fact he recommended us to them.
  • Don't go with Tiscali !
That's who i'm with and had loads of trouble with them.
Check this site for the best information.....

  • I am currently on Virgin.net's unlimited package of Ј24.99, but yesterday's weekly email from Virgin offered me Ј17.99 for a limited service (limited to 3Gb - more than Wanadoo's limited package, and more than my own monthly requirments).
I am unsure if this is open to just existin customers, or to new subscribers also. Worth checking out!
  • A lot of people slate NTLworld but I've used them for years. I upgraded to broadband about two years ago. They give you a few options:
    1) 300K Broadband Internet @ Ј17.99p/month
    2) 750K Broadband Internet @ Ј24.99p/month
    3) 1.5Mb Broadband Internet @ Ј37.99p/month
If you choose NTL you would require a cable connection being available to your place of installation. Their website: https://www.home.ntl.com/icat/broadband
Has a "postcode" checking facility to see if it's available in your area.
Faster speeds than most at good prices. I think there might even be a half price offer on at the moment with free installation, but check it out first if you decide to use them.
  • Have a look at www.firenet.uk.net Well reviewed and Ј20pm unlimited 512 with introductory discounts.
Ј9.99 pm for first 3 months and no ties reverting to Ј19.99 pm thereafter for 512 or Ј18.49 pm for 250.
ISP received recent Which? award with special mention of tech support who are real people!
  • I'm with plus.net - I think their packages start at around Ј14.99 pm.
Also their customer services and technical help lines
are 0845 numbers unlike many providers which are premium rate which I find reassuring.
I've been with them for around 2.5 yrs - first with dial up and recently with broadband and no complaints.
  • I am on NTL for about 18 months. The first 8 months nothing but trouble kept going off turned out to be the wrong contection used in the house and the terminals in the box outside werent tight enough so arking in the box. That was sorted out with a 2 month discount after asking for 3. Now we have had 4 days of 10mins on and then hours off, proberly because thay have increased the speed to everyone. So for Ј17.99 per month it can be touch and go, but on the whole go. :
  • Hmmm....
NTLs Ј18 package used to be 150k didn't it? Now it says 300k on the website so exisiting customers should get their speeds upgraded but I don't see a single difference in surfing or downloading. >
  • your area may have not been upgraded yet. There doing it in stages. They have a postcode checker that tells you when you will be upgraded at: https://www.ntlworld.com/speedupgrade
The only thing is its not very accurate my postcode says it will be upgraded in september but I got my upgrade on the 1st August.
  • I have been with V21 for a few years now with no problems, their broadband is 512k, Ј19.99 a mnth & unlimited downloads. !;D
..and there is no annual contract so you aint tied to them.

  • I've been with Tiscali for about 5 months now.
    No problems at all.
    150 Kbs
    Ј14.99/month
  • i am currently on bt yahoo dialup and am getting a new computer shorly and we will then upgrade to broadband.
my dad is kind of insisting we stick to bt but i was wondering if that is the best deal for me? i have heard horror stories about tiscali, and no cable here so cant have ntl or telewest.
my main reasons for needing broadband is so i dont have to keep worrying about goign over a fixed amount of hours as i currently do and because i go on a lot of forusm i want it to be speedy so i can do lots more posts instead of having to psot limited amounts due to slow dialup.
anyway hopefully we will get it sorted soon.
  • DO NOT GO WITH TISCALI
I REPEAT DO NOT GO WITH TISCALI
BULLDOG BROADBAND IS VERY GOOD I HAVE THE 2MB AT 29.99
