A question about : Weed Killer

This is something i have used myself and had excellent results.
For the use on paths, patios, round the edges of the house - you know them that grow practically up the wall of the house awkward to get at places.
The other thing about using this it also cleans the flags where the birds poop too.

Just use Jeyes fluid and water it down and can be put in a spray type gun or watering can - but don't use these for anything else, which you won't as you will need to use them another time or next year.
It does also deter creepy crawlies from getting in the house.

A tin of Jeyes fluid will go along way much cheaper than buying weed killers.

  • Jeyes fluid is great
its good for sterelising the green house at the end of the season as well, stops any diseases lying round to attack your new seedlings next year.
if you only have a couple of bad bad weeds you want to kill off but dont want to kill the plants around it
brown vinegar !HOT !will do the job ! !you may have to do it again in a few days but that will be it
  • Apparently Jeyes fluid is also good for killing ants - so my mum says ;D
  • Any tips for homemade or cheap shop bought weed killer
  • Neat Vinegar! Yes really. Vinegar again! Pet & child safe too. Be careful only to put it on things you want to get rid of though 'cos once it's applied it doesn't discriminate between dandelions or daffodils
  • the hotter the better though and its brown vinegar you need
might have to do the weeds twice but it works fine just as good as the expensive lethal weed killer you buy
  • My boyfriend tried to use some Roundup at the weekend (at great expense! I should have come here first ;D) and it hasn't worked. We'll get to work on the hot brown vinegar - do you sprinkle or drown the plants in the stuff?
  • pour it round the root if you can
the roundup will work but you wont see it for a few days
the vinegar works great on paths as well
  • We bought a cheap weed flame gun from Lidl last year so its worth checking out Lidl or Aldi for those - you just blast the weeds!
  • True to form it was MY fault that I hadn't checked this site first before he started trying to kill weeds. This weekend industrial sized quatities of brown vinegar will be used on our garden (due to the nature of the weeds!).
    ;D ;D ;D
  • My mum recomended the water from boiling eggs! I don't know what the science is behind it but it works.
  • yep my gran used to do that too. forgot that.
  • My OH's brainwave for getting rid of weeds (and recycling an unused purchase from the past) was to use his hot-air paint stripper. A quick blast of the hot air on weeds growing along the driveway made them wither. He went back over them the next day and they withered away to crumbs that he just brushed up. Great fun, and much safer than a flame thrower, but murder on the knees. It also works on ants (sorry, ants).
  • Hi,
Found this link last week, and I thought it was a wonderful way of getting revenge
Ground elder is terrible, and presumably this works if you like the taste!! The articles title is: Ground Elder Recipes - Eat Your Way to Eradicating a Troublesome Weed

Some other weeds are also edible e.g. dandelion leaves
  • Just a note to say do not use Jeyes fluid or any other phenol-based disinfectant (eg. Izol, Dettol,TCP,Lysol), if you have cats. It is extremely toxic and can be absorbed through the skin or feet.
  • has anyone used brown vina ger?
  • Pour boiling water on young weeds and it kills them. That is the cheapest thing.
  • wher can i get a weed flame gun -lidle dont do them anymore
  • I use my steam cleaner it's an old earlex model and I use the wallpaper stripping attachment as it's a flat plate and just 2 mins on each patch of weeds and they just wither and die off,no chemicals just steam
