A question about : Wedding

Riiiiight I've been looking into wedding cakes and costs... and whilst a wedding cake looks great and beautiful they are SO expensive!!!! Not Saying that chocolate fountains are any better but some friends of some friends had one a their wedding and the reports are that they were fantastic fun and different from fruit cake! - so have anyone had one at their wedding?

I found one company near by me who would do it without charging milage which is great title=Jumping

Anyone had a fountain instead of a cake?

Best answers:

  • I know what you mean about cakes they do look amazing and they are so expensive. However there are people out there who will do them cheaper as they work from home and don't have the overheads that shops do.
When I got married I went to my local sugarcraft shop to buy some things to make my husband a birthday cake. I ended up enrolling in classes to decorate cakes. They were only short classes usually 2 night or 4 nights and there were a lot of people who were there with the intention of making their own wedding cakes or their son/daughter/friend etc. Its a really good way to do it. Its not that difficult to make a wedding that looks good. I've made three now for family members at a fraction of the cost too.
Some of the more modern looking cakes with beads and ribbons and feathers are very easy to make. Just a thought if you decide to go along with the cake idea.
  • Decorate the M&S ones. I think they sell round and square in three sizes and then you could have the fountain as well.
  • Blimey those chocolate fountains are expensive too for what they are. Could you not do one yourself? They are only about Ј25 to buy.
  • Those are like HUGE ones I think the one I saw at a wedding fair which is the same one is about 3-4 tiers and about 1 meter tall when stood on a table... It would be a HUGE centrepiece
  • Chocolate fountain sounds great to me, although they look nice I always think wedding cakes are a bit boring to eat. Don't have a clue about the fountains cost wise though but if I was getting married again that would be my choice.
  • Ok sorry, I havn't been to any wedding fayres yet. They don't seem to cater for my tastes
  • My auntie made my cake, and then her friend did all the sugarcrafting on it at cost - the cost of wehich was picked up by my auntie as a wedding pressie for us both. Just a thought re- the chocolate fountain - personally I would steer clear, as most people's clothing/faces/hands and meted chocolate don't get on terribly well - OK if your in your oldies, but a different story when you are in your best bib and tucker!
  • BOTH!
It really isn't that difficult to make your own weding cake, if you can't/won't bake the cakes, then buy ready iced ones and just buy the things (sorry can't remember what they are called) to stack the together.
The Chocolate fountain sounds realy good, but I would have to have some yummy wedding cake too
    Good luck with your wedding.
    Zippy x
  • Sorry but I think chocolate fountains are passe now Everyone is having them & they are so overpriced for what you actually get, a cake is much better value for money. My friends didn't have a traditional cake but a really yummy 2 tier chocoalte gateaux topped with tons of fresh berries & chcoclate swirls around the edges (kind of like a fence!), only cost Ј100 and it worked as both a wedding cake & dessert so saved money on the food!. Another friend made 150 large cupcakes in posh paper cases, dusted them with icing sugar & popped a singe ready-made iced flower on each one & displayed them on a hired 3 tier stand. Cost much less than Ј100 & looked really really stunning.
I would suggest thinking outside the box a bit more, but please, not a choclate fountain, they are sooooo common!
  • I love the tiers of cup cakes: Lets face it, how many people actually like wedding cake? )
I dont think i would go for the choc fountain myself, mainly because i think alot of ladies maybe warey of runny chocolate and new posh clothes.
  • Hi, I have a small choc fountain and imo I would say that it's not a fab idea for a wedding esp if there will be children there.
We set mine up for a friends house warming and it was great, everybody knew exactly where their kids were all night (at the fountain) however we had to take it in turns to oversee what was happening so the choc didn't turn into a gloopy mess. The kids were covered in choc, and loved every minute but unless you are prepared to pay the very expensive prices to get a company to run it all night for you then it's not worth it and at those prices it's definately not worth it. Personally I'd go for one of those gorgeous chocolate wedding cakes instead, but then I can't cos' I'm not getting married and the rest of the Murphy's no more pies club might get a bit cross with me for breaking my diet:rolleyes:
  • My MIL made the wedding cake and then we paid for it to be professionaly iced; didn't work out too expensive at all.
As for fountains, i've heard horror stories about these ie the left over chocolate is left in the fountain and reheated for he next party eeeewww!! So you could be getting someone elses hair and other bits in your choccy. Also the amount of oil they pour in to keep the chocolate smooth and flowing (don't need dodgy belly on wedding night or before jetting off somewhere!!)
I've never used one and these may just be urban myths, but it has put me off. If i had one i'd have to insist on seeing the fountain been set up and watching them open NEW chocolate to add in!
  • I went to a party with a chocolate fountain, but I didn't like it. The chocolate was sickly sweet and tasted like cheap chocolate. I only had 2 things dipped in the fountain and that was enough for me.
That's not like me, as I can scoff huge quantities of quality chocolate like Green & Blacks etc., without feeling sick
If you are picky about chocolate like me, make sure you get to test what you will be eating before you hire the fountain.
I made my own fruit cake, and iced it myself, and got loads of compliments on it. There was another wedding party on in the hotel, and both parties were mingling in the foyer with their cakes and coffees after the meals. Two little girls from the other party came and asked if they could have some of my cake, then went and told the other bride that my cake was better than her cake - ooops Thankfully she saw the funny side
  • If you're as messy as me, then a chocolate fountain and a white dress would not be a good mix!!
If you do have chocolate fountain, like the above poster said, use good chocolate or it can taste greasy and sickly.
  • Wedding cakes are great, keep the top tier for your first childs christening cake, taste great, I'm sure you can find a relative somewhere who's a whizz at them so will keep the cost down.
I'm with the negatives on the chocolate fountain, too kitsch I'm afraid, even more so since I saw the residue in one a while ago - yuk yuk yuk.
  • Just had another idea! If you still don't want a traditional wedding cake, how about having the French version! Thats a big HUGE cone made up of profiter rolls topped with spun sugar instead of chocolate (personally I think I'd have both!) I can't remember what the proper name for it is but any cake maker will know what you are talking about, although not particually cheap (all those eggs! Not to mention the cream!) but it could work as both a wedding cake & a dessert to cut costs on the meal. Not many people in the UK have this but it really does have the WOW! factor
