A question about : Water Rates by postcode

Im moving into the same area as my friend, she said her rates are double what we pay for same size proerty (dont think shes on a meter either!)

Is there any reason for the price hike?

Best answers:

  • Different suppliers operate different tariffs - is it the same supplier??
  • If you are not metered, then your water charges are based on your Rateable Value(RV)
The RV does not have any connection to Council Tax banding.
The RV was assessed on the notional rent each property could command, and that assessment could have been made as long ago as 1972.
Area, modernised or not(in 1972) type of house, facilities in area(schools, public transport etc) all were taken into account.
  • United Utlilities yes
  • When you say same supplier, do you mean same as your friend or do you mean that your old and new homes are both United Utilities?
Different water boards have differenet rates and some are much more expensive - I paid much more with South West Water as they are at at the top end.
So you could have two identical houses a few miles apart billed by different boards paying very different bills.
