A question about : Virgin Trains Delay Repay from 1 April 2013

I have just discovered that Virgin Trains have changed their refund policy to the Delay Repay system as of 1st April 2013. As a season ticket holder I quite liked the auto refunds received from Virgin Trains. Now I will need to claim for each delay. I have looked for websites to help keep track of the delays (and being honest, so I can maximise my refunds) but the two sites I've found don't seem that great - it's reliant on commuters adding the detail. I have searched moneysavingexpert.com but cannot see any tips or if there's a recommended site or app to keep track of the delays. Is there any way I can obtain official list of refunds from Virgin Trains itself? Any suggestions?

  • Keeping a list yourself is not beyond the wit of man - or woman.
  • Libby, as someone who has returned to commuting on Virgin Trains (Birmingham New St. - London Euston), I was also surprised by their change to compensation policy. I have spoken to them and they say that they had to change it when they regained the franchise, to bring it into line with other operators compensation policies.
    I have just put in a claim, online, on my season ticket for a journey on 23rd July (the day lightning knocked out signalling equipment).
    Based on their advice for season ticket holders:
    1) Put in a claim for each disrupted journey.
    2) They will 'apportion' it out - so in my case, my monthly season ticket is Ј958.10. Assuming they apportion it out to 31 calendar days (not 20 working days, I fear) - that's Ј30.90 per day return.
    3) They have three time periods for compensation:
    a)30-59 mins - 50% of one way portion of return journey.
    b) 60-119 mins - 100% of relevant portion of return journey.
    c) 120+ mins - 100% of both portions of return journey.
    They will send vouchers for the appropriate amount, which you can then use to discount your season ticket renewal.
    I'll let you know what happens.

    Received Ј25.00 for the claim above (plus Ј19.00 for another claim). I'm guessing that the reason it's not the full Ј30.90 is because they don't cover the 'Underground' portion of my season ticket.
    Interesting to note that when you claim online, you can't give 'your version of the story'. Virgin check their own Journey Logs (as they stated in the accompanying letter) and decide accordingly.
