A question about : Utility Enquiry Led to Unknowingly Switching Supplier

Hi there,

I received a phone call today from Scottish Power saying that they were sad I was leaving. Obviously very confused, I enquired what they were talking about. Apparently after an enquiry with Good Energy, I had 'switched' over supplier to them.

By an enquiry, what I literally mean was, I entered my address into their site for more information. I read their pamphlet and realised they were more expensive than Scottish Power and threw it in the bin.

It's called an 'erroneous takeover' I believe, but I'm not really sure where I stand with my rights. I've lost my fixed energy plan so may pay more with a new supplier, but also since it is winter my account is currently in credit with Scottish Power.

I found out today that I was switching from my bank, telling me I was Ј200 overdrawn, because Scottish Power took my remaining owed money.

It's just so annoying that I've lost a good deal with my supplier. I feel violated that a firm could so unethically steal business. I feel annoyed that I heard of the switch from my bank due to being overdrawn (cash flow didn't project for extra cash going out at this time of the month).

I could go on and on ...

Where do I stand on this? Does anyone have any experience with erroneous takeovers?

Many thanks in advance,

Tom Cusack

  • It's called an 'erroneous transfer'. Unless you gave Good Energy your bank details in order to set up a DD, I don't quite see how they could have transferred you-they would't even have your name if all you did was enter your house number and postcode in order to get a quote? If you only just received the 'sorry you are leaving' letter then you may still be in the cooling off period. The whole point of that letter is to alert you to cancel the switch in time if it is erroneous.
What do GE have to say about this? Not all erroneous transfers are deliberate, it's often due to wrong address details being entered onto a new account.
