My girlfriend suffers from IBS which manisfests itself mostly as trapped wind.

She takes mebevarine which has greatly decreased the occurences of the trapped wind pain but she still does get it from time to time and it's very painful.

We've tied Gavilast/Zantac, Gaviscon, peppermint tea and me rubbing her back.

Does anyone know of any other ideas, the only one I've come up with that we haven't yet tried is gripe water and I was wondering if anyone else has this problem and has any further ideas for solutions.

All help will be gratefully received

Brian

Best answers:

  • Try fennel tea.
  • I've heard of that is that an infusion of the root?
  • Charcol tablets
  • I was always made to drink cooled boiled water as a child
  • Two friends of mine with IBS have had to see a dietician to sort out what they were sensitive to - which stopped most of the attacks.
    Have she tried Colperin? https://www.boots.com/shop/product_de...ductid=1012845
  • Has she tried the Yakult type drinks?
My future MIL was advised to drink 3 per day for her IBS but as they are expensive I gave her some Acidophilus Tablets. They are available from health food shops are are basically the same as the Yakult drinks but in a concentrated tablet form.
This is what mine say on the label.....
Acidophilus Plus provides a spectrum of 'friendly' lactic bacteria which should inhabit a healthy gut. May be chosen during and following a course of anti-biotics, when travelling abroad and to mainain the balance of bacteria in the gut- providing the ideal environment for digestion and healthy bowel regularity.
    hope this helps x
  • You can buy fennel tea bags from health food shops. I think they are yummy! Don't know what they'd do for IBS or wind, maybe Elona will give better advice as to whether you need to try something more complicated than the tea bags!
  • dill is good too - as found in gripe water!
I do not have irritable bowels but suffered badly with wind after all of my caesarians and found peppermint tablets worked better than tea (you can get from places such as Holand and barratt)
I also found drinking diluted gaviscon or maalox - diluted with warm water helpful
one of the midwives gave us this in evening and called it maalox tea!
    I also found this on

    "Four winds
A mixture of Caraway, Mint, Fennel and Melissa aids digestion particularly when suffering from trapped wind. Four winds tea has a similar taste to Peppermint.
    Lemon Balm
Lemon Balm uplifts the spirits. It eases tension, depression, and headaches as well as acting as an antispasmodic to the digestive system.
    Fennel
Do you suffer from bloating and too much trapped wind? Fennel tea eases those uncomfortable feelings of pressure and settling down the digestive system.

  • A big thank you guys and gals loads of things to try, I'll update you soon.
  • Savvy Sue was right . I did mean plain fennel tea bags,
  • Just wanted to say - I suffer from IBS and sometimes it's really bad - it's like I'm full of wind in the abdomen. I use Colpermin at the very first sign of it, and within a few hours it subsides. If that doesn't help, then a couple of Rennie Deflatine does the trick. Doesn't help much with the mucus and stuff, but takes that unbearable pain/ache away which is half the battle.
  • yoga maybe?
  • I agree with colpermin or colofac. I have suffered with IBS for over 20 years and these work.
They contain peppermint oil in an enteric coated capsule to get to the site of the pain.
When I was pregnant I had really bad IBS and a doctor recommended Fybogel which did help.
