A question about : Train Travel: starting short (NOT breaking journey)

Ticket from Winchester to London is Ј22. Ticket from Bournemouth to London (calling at Winchester) is Ј7.50 (at certain times). Can I buy the Bournemouth-London ticket but start my journey at Winchester - ie, will the ticket barriers at Winch let me through and, even if they don't, should I still be allowed through by the attendant?

Best answers:

  • Hello, dzug
    Thanks for the swift reply.
Ј22 (or thereabouts) is with someone else travelling with a Two Together card.
  • For what it's worth, the OP could make a small saving by buying discounted CDR tickets from Winchester to Basingstoke, and then separate SCO (or CDR, if necessary) tickets from Basingstoke to London.
However, the train(s) would then need to stop at Basingstoke in both directions, and not all do.
  • Rule of thumb is - is the company running the service being disadvantaged by you using a cheaper ticket unrepresentative of the journey being made?
The answer is of course, yes.
Since any correct fare is appreciably higher by using such a ticket with the intent of not paying the correct fare you are committing fraud.
Why not jump in the car and then get on the train at Bournemouth it's only 40 miles.
  • I work as a train guard on this very route, I'm afraid if you board at Winchester using a ticket to Basingstoke and then use the 'Advance' ticket to travel beyond Basingstoke you would be in breach of the T&Cs of the Advance ticket and would be expected to pay the full single fare from Basingstoke to London of Ј23.80 plus the cost of a ticket back to Winchester. At best you might not be noticed by the guard in which case you've saved a few quid, at worst revenue inspectors might board the train and you would end up with a penalty fare of Ј47.20-and still have to buy another ticket back to Winchester.
Ultimately it's your call, but taking the risk could be a very expensive mistake.
  • Thanks for all your input - most helpful. I don't want to break the T&Cs - short trip to Soton and then Megatrain up sounds good.
