A question about : Train tickets for the Olympic Games

It's good to see a dedicated sub board for the London Olympic Games.title=Big

If you're travelling to London by train in July and August when the Olympic Games are on, buy your tickets now.

I've managed to get a return ticket with East Coast Trains for ~Ј20.title=Cool

Best answers:

  • We combined our accommodation and travel and booked sleeper tickets from Edinburgh. Ј56 each way. Great value.
  • Does anyone know how the "olympic travel card" will work? Everything says it'll work on all public transport in the London zones, but what happens if you can get a direct train from where you live, outside london, in to london? Will we have to get off the train at Clapham, swipe the card (it looks like an oyster card to me) then get back on a later train?
  • I believe you just pay for the section outside of London but do not need to get off the train.
I too live outside London and have tickets for the Paralympics. As the Games Travelcard covers Zones 1-9, and say you lived in Milton Keynes. On the NationalRail 2012 Games Ticket website just put in for a return from Milton Keynes to your venue (say Stratford International - for the games) and the system will work out the element you need to pay. The good thing if you have a railcard (network railcard, senior railcard etc) that is also taken into consideration for the section of travel that is outside of Zone 9 plus you are able to travel in peak time for a lot less than the standard price BUT ONLY if you buy your train tickets in advance on the dedicated website (or I think you can by telephone). Delivery charge of Ј1.50 and train tickets despatched to you about 6 weeks in advance.
    Hope this helps.
  • Does anyone know how the included travelcard will work if we travel down on one day and back the next? Do we get travelcards for one or both days? Thanks
We've had to book an overnight stay as we can't get to the venue from home on the day for an early event.
I did email the enquiries from their website and got a reply from the agent saying they didn't know!
  • I had a look on the bespoke site the day it launched as I need to get Dad and I there from Carlisle travelling down on the 9th and back up on the 10th August. On a normal advance we're looking at under Ј100 for two of us.
Best price on the 'cheaper' olympic advance site is Ј270 for both of us. It says that singles are available for Ј31.40 but these don't exist and never have. I looked at the price of a standard advance on the day they were released for our dates and it came out at Ј206 for two of us.
In tandem with everyone else they're hiking the prices up by almost double and catching those who cant be bothered and think 'special olympic cheap advances' will actually be that.
We're driving and I've no doubt the trains will be empty at the prices being asked.
  • there is someone on these forums who, i'm sure, must work for a train company. i will ask a question about fares, times etc and they always come back with something amazing and fantastic. try it. it is such a long way to drive, and with the cost of petrol............
  • I live by a chiltern railway station and it's 50 miles to London. I have a railcard so get discounted travel normally. After confirming our tickets this week I have sorted all the train journeys. They are so much cheaper than what we would normally pay for off-peak. It works out about Ј9 each gamescard return to Stratford, that's amazing. We were thinking of parking at the tube and using our Oyster cards, as that's usually cheaper for 4, but not this time.
    Very pleased.
  • Received our train tickets in the post today. Things are starting to happen.
