A question about : Theatre

/
With lots of good shows on at theatres across the country and various ways to get cheap theatre tickets for less we wanted to find out how often people are going.

Do you visit the theatre more than you used to? Or perhaps you're watching theatre shows at the Cinema instead?

What do you tend to see?

If you let us know it'll help us know what kind of thing you like to see and hunt down cheap theatre tickets for our Cinema and Theatre deals.

  • I'm not quite sure how to answer this - if you go to see a stand up comedian doing a one night stand at a theatre does that count ? (I do that a couple of times a year)
What about things like, this, that I'm going to in a couple of months ? https://www.atgtickets.com/shows/yamato-drummers/
Or are you only interested in full blown theatrical shows - I do that as often as there is anything interesting within travelling distance - perhaps four or five times a year.
And I also go to the live cinema screens of the RSC, Globe and Natinoal Theatre at least half a dozen times a year.
For me, the issue is not really the cost (the theatres close to me all have great discounts if you become a member for a year, whcih can recoup the membership fee in only a couple of visits) but the lack of appeal of what the theatres put on.
I'm licy inthat I live within travelling distance of quite a number of theatres, but I'm a bit of a 'culture vulture' so I mainly like to see what I'd call 'proper plays'. I realise I'm in a minority where I am - most of the local theatres concentrate on comedians and these musical shows like 'We will rock you' and 'mama mia' because that's what puts the bums on seats.
  • Once a year or so.
Went to see the Lion King three times in the space of 18 months. Tomorrow I'm going to see Cats and within 12 months, it's likely I'll see Wicked too.
Apart from that, there isn't really anything I'd like to go see around at the moment. Unless Starlight Express comes back to London... expensive to put on though.
  • Any trip to the theatre can be counted, whatever you're going to see p00hsticks.
    Thanks for replying
  • I usually go a couple of times a year locally, and also see a west end musical every year during a weekend break. I've been to a couple of the National Theatre Live link-ups too, which I've enjoyed.
  • I've been to see Lion King, War Horse and Jersey Boys this year - all bought as presents - but 3 shows in a year like this year is unusual as tickets are expensive.
  • Just came back from London watched Wicked Tuesday night and Matilda Wednesday afternoon,we purchased Matilda tickets on day of performance and paid Ј30 for Ј95 seats Bargain, show was fantastic too.We usually do a couple of shows a year if possible.
  • I try and go every couple of months, although I am hoping to go more as I have just moved to an area with a few nice theatres. Once or twice a year I will go to London and visit the National Theatre.
I would love to see more deals for regional theatres and for London that doesn't just focus on the West End musicals etc. You can get great deals on things like the London fringe or the South Bank, but they never seem to be mentioned on deals sites. I would also be interested in deals on opera and ballet.
  • When ever I have a Saturday in London I will try and get to see two shows. Luckily, I have Chichester, Southampton and Guildford a short drive away so always lots to choose from (as well as our local theatre).
  • I love going to the theatre. My local theatres are good, but expensive. Unfortunately it's still somehow seen as odd by other people to go to the theatre on your own!
I would love to see offers for regional theatres - London's great but few us us can take advantage of the offers
  • Go to London once or twice a year. In January saw two shows; Miss Saigon and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. We like happy shows that give you a lift, not weepy, depressing ones.
Also we now only book first or second price tickets, if they are affordable. If you are going to a show do it properly, no more sitting in cheap cramped seats with no leg-room
It is good to have a forum where the Theatre is discussed. We don't mind seeing the lesser known (and cheaper) productions but you need some information to make an informed choice.
Having said that people's tastes differ enormously. We thought Miss Saigon was depressing but some of our friends loved it. I guess some people are not happy unless they are sobbing copiously.
  • I saw nothing in January, but three things in Feb all at our local theatre.
March is down for one visit and three in April, so actually I go more often than there is an option for.
So far have seen an operetta, a play and the Swinging Cotton Club, which was about the famous Cotton Club in Harlem - excellent show with singers, live band and some very energetic dancers.
  • Once every few years.
  • I normally go three or four times a year.
It used to be to the West End, but it has got so expensive. Now we go to regional theatres, mostly the Marlowe at Canterbury.
  • I go as often as I can as love musicals, opera, ballet and drama. Went twice in January up London but do find it very expensive. I regularly go to local theatres too. I would love to know when tickets have been discounted.
  • I only go a couple of times a year maximum.
An each time I go I always get the premium seat tickets which, on average costs me about Ј100.
Yes I know that is a lot but I am petite and want guaranteed good views.
I've paid for cheap seats before and each time it has been less than satisfactory. One time I paid Ј25 to see a comedian and the seat was so far back I would have got a better view had I watched it on tv at home! Another time I paid Ј25 I was so much to the side and someone taller in front blocked my view completely.
I don't feel that going for the cheap seats and being grumpy about the lack of views is an enjoyable night out. If anything, it is a waste of my time and I then feel even more disgruntled at paying for the bus fare there and back.
Pay for the premium price to be right on centre and about 4/5 rows back then I am guaranteed to enjoy is far worth it and more MSE in my opinion. You get what you pay for really.
  • we go atleast once a month but try and go more often, have an ATG card which gets us in discounted,
  • I love going to the theatre, both local and in London. I like musicals and proper plays although you don't get so many of them in London.
So far this year I have seen Thriller, Cats and Dance till Dawn. That is more than normal though - I guess it would normally be once every 6 weeks or so. I would go more if I could afford to. I do like to have reasonable seats but do try and get discounted ones if possible. I got 2 tickets for Dance till Dawn and they were second row from the front in the stalls - they should have been Ј60 each and I got them for Ј30 each (I think because I only bought them about a week before the show ended so they were selling them off).
I do Consumer Pulse (inputting any purchases of clothes, books, cds, cinema visits etc) and use my vouchers to get theatre tickets.
  • Two or three times a month though that doesn't seem to be an option. I almost never pay full price though
