A question about : stranded in Europe due to ash cloud

Hi All

Just wondered if anyone had any luck in getting compensation from BA when their flight was cancelled due to the ash cloud recently.

My flight was cancelled, the BA office at the local airport was shut for the whole weekend, I had to keep ringing back to Glasgow from abroad, they wouldn't confirm what compensation I could get, my hotel was full and I had to leave it due to a large regional event therefore I couldn't get a reasonably priced hotel and didn't dare risk booking an expensive one. I ended up cadging a sofa for two nights from a friend of a friend. I had to eat takeaways and ingredients bought at the supermarket.

Now BA say I'm not entitled to anything without a receipt, whereas I did everything I could to save money. Is this fair?

BA are starting to act more like a budget airline.

Any advice gratefully received,
Roy

Best answers:

  • What do you want compensation for - a takeaway?
  • Sorry if this is not the answers you were looking for but BA is quite within their rights to ask for receipts. They need receipts to verify your costs and to auditors. They dont know where you stayed or how much your food cost.
Ok you did it on the cheap thinking it would help but you should have kept receipts to verify this even if it was only a few euros.
  • No, the point I'm making is that BA's handling of stranded passengers didn't appear much better than Ryan Air - I had to repeatedly call back to the UK on my mobile (as I said, the local office was shut for the weekend) and BA wouldn't agree what compensation would be payable. Which is rather odd as it's not the first time there have been problems of a volcano nature. I therefore quite rightly felt abandoned.
BA did have flights on the next day (a Sunday) but they would not agree to put me on one of them because it would have cost them more. I asked them why and they originally stated that the flights were full - I checked, they weren't. It was then that they started referring to the cost aspect. Well what about my time as self employed then - that's free to BA is it?
As I am self employed I often have to catch up with work at the weekends and in evenings, I wasn't able to do this as I was kept away from my home office for longer than necessary.
BA's whole attitude over the last few months has been increasing difficult to deal with - the staff are becoming noticeably surly and fractious which seems to stem from their strike and labour related problems.
I notice that EasyJet have just been fined for their handling of the volcano troubles - they may not be the only ones the way things are going.
  • Simple, get your friend to write you an Invoice for the night board and lodging. Its legitamate (I'm sure you paid your friend something )
