A question about : Stranded in Athens

My family and I were stranded in Athens for an extra week back in April because of the volcanic ash cloud. I`m still waiting to hear whether my insurance claim for delay has been successful, and I have just sent a letter to the airline, Viking Hellas, asking for compensation for not offering any assistance towards the cost of food (or anything else) which I gather they are obliged to provide. We were not camped out at the airport and were lucky enough to have accommodation with family, but does anyone know whether I stand a good chance and is EU law on my side? has anyone else claimed successfully?

Best answers:

  • Hi Nicolahk - Ryanair sent this link for my claim - it should apply to all airlines in all EU countries. If you scroll down you should find the list of countries, with links. Greece is on the list. HTH Good luck!

  • We were stranded for a week in Athens too. Insurance company, AXA, told us to go to airline first - KLM - and if unsuccessful, then go back to them although it wasn't likely that they would pay out because we hadn't purchased additional cover for cancellations / delays! We're struggling to get anywhere with KLM so are now in process of putting together a claim to insurance company - but I don't hold out much hope.
You should definately be covereed for expenses - food and accommodation - as per EU Regulation 261/2004.
Sorry, I can't post the link to the regulation because I'm new to the forum! - You should find it easily enough if you google it.
