A question about : Stone paving quote

I have about eighteen 600x900 Indian stone slabs left over from a garden landscaping job I had completed recently. I want to get these blocks laid in place of existing concrete slabs at the front of my house- they cover the area I need paving. I have been quoted 900 pounds (by a chap with a decent local reputation) for this, which involves breaking up the existing concrete and building a low brick wall (about three or four bricks high) as the face on which the stone slabs will sit. I am in Derbyshire- does the quote seem fair please, anyone?

Best answers:

  • Impossible to say - is it existing slabs to be lifted or solid concrete to break out? Are you having a foundation dug for the low brick wall? Is there any existing hardcore and sand?
But viewed in a different light...I am suggesting Ј150 cash per day cash would be a good rate for a groundworker in Derbyshire. The work does not represent 6-7 days work. I am thinking of two days work.
  • Is he doing a proper job
Break out existing, dig down 150mm +, lay hardcore and wacker ,Bed sandstone on a min 50mm mortar mix, point .... Defiantly more than 2 days workmanship even if it does seem like 10sqm isn't much
  • Ј80 a square metre is what I was quoted for prep and lay. I did my own in the end and would not even entertain doing it again for Ј300! Hard going
  • Thanks very much for the replies so far. The existing concrete is 600x900 slab which sit atop mortar which has been damaged by ingress of sycamore roots (now removed) and the quote involved breaking them up and using them as hardcore rather than removing them from site.
He seemed to think the job would take four days or so, so 900 seems a bit steep. I am seeking other quotes but the info on here is much appreciated.
