A question about : Sock monkeys!

Have sat with my shiny new sewing machine tonight (xmas present of my dad) and after spending over an hour trying to figure out what goes where on the machine I have sewn up my first sock monkey ... it is all still in seperate bits at the moment as I have no stuffing (forgot to buy it and need to go out tomorrow and get some) However following various destructions (instructions) and plenty of swearing i am now at the stage of how the hell do you do the mouth??? and does he really need a mouth or can i just stitch some felt in the shape of lips?

I used knee length socks which I think was wrong title=ROTFL however I am happy with all my seperate bits ready to stuff tomorrow and then hand stitch the other bits together.

Any help appreciated. I think it may have been sethsgran that made them fairly regular?

Help please title=Smile

  • Can't really help (ok, can't help at all ) cos haven't made one but can't wait to see yours finished
  • Sock Monkey??
Sounds fab - would also be grateful for pattern / instructions? Sounds like something the kids would love to make as Xmas prezzies.

  • I made a sock monkey out of a pair of football socks and it came out massive. I think the normal ankle sox are best. The mouth is quite tricky and you have to be patient to get the effect. Mine isnt the neatest handstitching around the mouth and my arms turned out too long and need to be stitched down a bit near his sides. When I get home from work I shall post a picture of him if you promise not to wet yourself laughing!!!
  • A picture would be brilliant please Dopey all of the ones on the net just look so perfect and mine already has a deformed arm so I might sticth a plster on it ad tell my son he was fighting lol
  • I made sock monkeys with my Guides on camp and now am obsessed I use the Craftbits instructions here but don't have a sewing machine so do it by hand.
  • sorry posted this in the wrong forum-my brain is easily confused lol
  • Rusty-mr chimp is definately deformed but adds to his character! my son uses it to throw round the house when he has his mates over!!!!
cant wait to see your completed one.
  • They are FAB! Am going to the local market tomorrow to get some socks now to knock some up for Xmas pressies.
Nice username by the way Rusty....made me spit tea all over my computer screen!
  • Dora he is lovely! So muchbetter than my poor effort lol ... I have stuffed him this afternoon and have stuffed his tail and ears, just his arms and mouth to go but I am still thinking of a different mouth as I think I will screw it all up ...
Here is a progress picture ... no laughing or you will make me cry! lol oh and the pink and black stripey socks for my next one
Thanks Wartime ... need a cloth?
  • Hi Rusty!
Just posted a bit about this on the crafty for christmas thread but thought I would pop a bit on here too. I have made sock monkeys with knee high socks and they do end up with long arms, legs and tail.
I find the mouth the trickiest bit as well and often it goes on wonky, which i claim just makes it more quirky!
I would take a piccie of the one I made my boyfriend as he was made with knee high socks as well but sadly he was popped into hibernation and placed gently in his box ready for the house move!
However if you are still lost I'm visiting my folks in a couple days and I know the sock monkey I made my brother is there and he too was made with knee high socks so I could show you him if you wanted.
In the meantime here is a picture of the last one I made:
  • i love all the sockmonkeys and rusty if you have no stuffing you could always use old tights (clean ofcourse) cut up into small pieces - this is what my mother and aunt used many years age when they made rag dolls
  • loving these sock monkeys
Just been to M&S and the had funky long socks down to 50p
Guess what we are making tomorrow
  • Check out my monkey

    He is FAB!
I've bought four pairs of socks today to start on mine soon which, if they are good enough will be Christmas presents for my son, daughter, nephew and niece.
  • He is fab! Love the socks! where did you get them?
  • They're brilliant !!! I'm sorely tempted to have a go but dread to think what mine would turn out like. (Thinking of printing out the instructions and giving them to a friend of mine...........she's due to go into hospital soon and will need fair time recovery period in bed afterwards and I know she'll go nuts with nothing to do......and she's pretty good with needle and thread
  • These are fantastic!!! Might have a nosey at the instructions and see if I'm capable... (Although I've got a quilt cover of DD's I was supposed to of sewn to cotbed size... Only been working on it for 2 months...)
