A question about : Should I Switch?

I am currently undecided as to whether or not it is worth my while switching electricity supplier, would appreciate thoughts from those on here.
I have in the past switched electricity suppliers frequently (no gas), but have been with british gas for 3 years now, originally on a low price fix tarriff. During this time I have also had solar panels fitted and my electricity usage is currently around 1500 kwh per year. Recently the fixed tarriff ended and I am now on standard tarriff, which has pushed my bills up, I now pay Ј28 per month dd. I think I could probably save around Ј70 per annum by switching, but am slightly reluctant to rock the boat, as I like the smart meter system I have with british gas, and to date I have also found they pay feed in tarriff very promptly .
As I have said, I have happily switched providers previously but just not sure if its worth it this time, what do others think?

Best answers:

  • Only you can decide. Point to note: your supply and generation contracts are separate. In other words, you can switch your energy supplier and BG will continue to pay your FITs.
For 1500 KWhs of electricity in my area, OVO would be a good deal at Ј231 fixed for 12 moths.
  • If your actual usage is as low as 1500kWh pa then you cannot possibly save as much as Ј70 per year. That would be about a 30% saving-no tariff varies by that much. Forget what your DD is at present, what matters is your actual annual usage and billing.
As above, you can simply leave your FITs with BG, there is no connection.
I presume that you must be heating and hot watering using oil or solid fuel, since your usage is so low?
if you can save maybe Ј50 for 15 mins work to switch, why wouldn't that be worth it? That's Ј200 per hour...
  • Well I've run the figures for my own region on BG Standard tariff and the biggest saving I can find is Ј53 (19% saving).
  • Sorry, I've double checked and the saving was Ј60. It was through a comparison site and the company was "isupply energy". I put in usage, not direct debit payments. I hadn't heard of the companynbut the daily standing charge was cheaper which is possibly why there was a good saving, but it was on a 12 month fixed tarriff, so could mean changing again next year.
Yes macman, heating and water is oil (and wood burner).
I probably will look at it again, you are right its worth it for 15 minutes work, thanks everyone for your thoughts.
