A question about : Should I ask to take the rest of the wine bottle home?

We often go out to dinner and order a bottle of wine or two at the restaurant. Sometimes, especially if we've bought a second bottle, we don't finish it all. Is it OK to ask if we can take the rest of the bottle home?

  • Yes. We always take left over wine home
  • Why ask? Just do it, you've bought it, its yours, just take it!
  • Definitely! You paid for it!
I ask for a doggy bag for other things too if they haven't been on plates, ie served in dishes at the table. It's criminal to waste so much when it can be used.
  • Does the resturant have a licence for 'off sales'?
  • There is the question of off licence but if you just take it they probably won't worry, most wine comes in screw tops these days or you can just carry a wine sealer, I have known restaurants bring a simple sealer when I haven't finished the bottle so I can take it.
  • you paid for it - and once its opened they cant give it to anyone else so just take it with you!
  • People have leftover wine???
  • Definitely take your unfinished wine (eh?) home.
Just if it's bottle #3, check it is your bottle - strolling out with someone else's tipple may be misunderstood!

Don't ask, the restaurant must say no if they don't have an off licence. Just take it.
  • Why is this even a thread? What a silly question! Do you really expect ANYONE on a money saving site to say they leave it?
  • Yep. Is there any other answer?
  • I have to admit I wouldn't think twice about it, yes I would take it.
  • I don't know why there is any confusion over 'off licence sales'.
Presumably the bottle was opened in the restaurant and therefore bought for in house sales for which the restaurant have a license.
It was not bought and sold as an off license sale but as part of a meal.
  • In our pub I always offer to get the cork/cap if someone has leftover wine-they do not need to ask. It's theirs. If they leave it, it goes down the sink! So I'd much rather they took it (& filled up their own recycling bin)
  • I can't believe this is even a question!
We always take the rest of the bottle home. We often ask the waiter to bring us the cork with the wine when we order it in case we don't finish the bottle – this has never even caused a raised eyebrow.
  • More than once, we've eaten in a restaurant and ordered a glass of wine each and the waiter has suggested we buy a bottle and take what we don't drink home. So, yes, taking what you've not drunk is perfectly OK.
