A question about : Serums: are they the key?

I've noticed after applying my makeup lately, particularly around the eyes and nose area, that my skin is looking noticeably dry. Not flakey, but dry.

I do wear moisturiser (argan oil all over the face; and a moisturiser on top of that, everywhere but the eye area, which is too sensitive for my normal facial moisturiser).

What can I do? Are serums the key - are they meant to give the extra 'oomph' that moisturisers can't achieve alone? If so, what does everybody here use?

Best answers:

  • Argan oil should be giving you extra moisture, serums do things like lifting and firming.
Perhaps you need a richer moisturizer? I do use an eye serum under my eye cream, but its for firming and giving an extra hand to eye cream.
  • I really notice the difference if I don't use serum. My favourites are origins perfect world and clarins hydra quench.
  • Look for a serum with hyaluronic acid in it. It holds something like 100 times its weight in water or something, so you put it on before your moisturiser and it really gives it an added oomph. I also put a thin layer of vaseline on top of my moisturiser at night, which is an occlusive so keeps the moisture locked in.
  • Personally, I'm put off by the exceptionally high prices, small pots/tubes and often poorly explained marketing claims around these things. It's a bit suspicious really how only expensive ingredients apparently do anything. I always wonder, when will someone release a product based on turnips from Germany? But, that never happens, it's always magic wonder berries from the Himalayas, with a fitting price tag of course
Anyway, I use avocado oil. Paid about Ј7 for half a litre. Mostly I started using it just because it helps with acne, in fact for me it was a big part of now having clear skin. However, beyond the anti-acne effects, the difference to my skin in general has been a surprise because it's been so noticeable. All the fine lines just vanished, particularly around my eyes, it's brighter, firmer and smoother. I use it all over the eye area, it's harmless enough, but of course getting any oil in your eye will make for blurry vision for a while, so I apply it lightly around there to avoid that.
  • I use rosehip oil - not the overpriced one from Trilogy but the exact same oil for a fraction of the price. I buy it from Amazon and it does wonders.
  • I like a serum, and believe it makes a difference.
The Aldi one is worth a try, I'm just finishing one off from superdrug that I've also liked. These are around the Ј3/4 mark I think, they seem the same as the No 7 one I've also used.
Definitely worth trying to see if you like them IMO.
