A question about : Rented flat prepayment meter

After some advice for my son, he lives in a house which is divided into 6 flats, each flat is like a bedsit and have a prepayment meter in each one, should each tenant recieve a statement of their energy usage along with how much they have spent and what the unit charge is? He is having to spend at least Ј40 per week in tokens which I think is extortionate for what is basically 1 room.

Best answers:

  • The major part of that Ј40 will be for the gas bill..its cold and the gas prepay will be on the suppliers standard tariff, usually the most expensive. For much lower bills he has to rid himself of the prepays and get credit meters installed for over 25% less.
Make sure your son uses only a prepay card and electric key which has been issued to himself as a new occupier. There could well be big debts left on from previous tenant. To check the gas prepay for any debt go to screens 26 and 27 ( with card inserted, hold down red button till it beeps then scroll thro. Electric debt is on screens "S " and "T " for the weekly repay.Key has to be inserted to see these screens. Also there could be a build up of standing charge debt if the meter has nt been credited too often
  • Thanks sacsquacco, there is no gas supply, all he has is a small wall heater, tv, fridge, kettle, microwave, shower. The landlord says all tenants pay the same rate but we do not know what that is as they don't recieve any statements?
  • Not only does the landlord have to reveal how much he is charging he also has to reveal how much he is charged.
  • Hi Wendy, normally tenants have electric prepay meters installed but as Nada666 indicates. the landlord could ve installed submeters. I m led to believe that the regulations forbid landlords from reselling electricity at a profit so the tenants would be paying the standard/variable tariff. Still make sure to check that its not a meter with a key to add credit and there is no debt on the meter
