A question about : Recommendations for 'Coffee Stops' in the North East please?

Hopefully Spring is on it's way and I'm hoping for some days out with OH. We like a mooch around markets, stately homes, charity shops, garden centres and a nice coffee stop. (Clean with pleasant staff and not too dear if possible)
I wondered if anyone could give me their personal recommendations please?
There's a wonderful thread with lots of info for Glasgow. I wondered if we could do the same for the North East. I'm thinking of Yorkshire to the Borders roughly, which is about our limit on a day out!
Thanks for any contributions or links title=Smile
Sorry just realised that maybe I should have posted on the 'days out' board please move if I'm out of place...title=Embarrassment

  • Betty's in York for tea. The little cafe in the metro at tynemouth is nice. Spurellis in amble one on corner in middle of road on main street in Alnwick
  • Thanks Sharnad, I'll add them to my list. (We often visit the Sunday market at the Metro station at Tynemouth) It's nice to have some recommendations for coffee when you're visiting a different town isn't it?
Good luck with your weight loss, I'm trying too but can always find room for a cheese scone!
One of our favourites is Birkheads Secret Gardens near Stanley. You can have coffee sitting on the terrace and enjoy the views for miles. (Not far from Beamish Open Air Museum which now does an annual ticket for about Ј16, a bargain if you live locally and can visit often.)
  • Thanks it's at 62 pound now. If there are any other towns tou are interested in just tell me and I will try to remeber there is a nice one at crashed pretty recent opposite jolly fisherman pin and there is a nice one at blaydon. Where farm shop is. Also have you been to brockbushes next to corbridge turn off main road next to a roundabout tht do nice pies quiche and cakes
  • There is a nice place in Jedburgh just past abbey up the next street which is cheap
  • Gosh, just realised that's over 4 stone! Well done, I lost a stone then stuck maybe I should be looking for local gyms instead of coffee shops!
Did you mean Blagdon Farm shop at Seaton Burn or is there something at Blaydon too please? I haven't been to Brockbushes for ages, thanks for the reminder. While searching for info on Blaydon I found this website, which might be useful: https://www.cosycoffeeshops.co.uk/200...shincliff.html I hadn't heard of this garden centre at Shincliff Durham. Visited on Saturday and was well impressed. Lovely garden centre and coffee shop. Plenty of parking and located next to the river Wear so I think that you could probably fit in a little walk from there too!
Sorry I presume that 'crashed' is a typo, can you help please?
Making a list ready to take with me on days out, thanks a lot for info
Also found a website called BigBarn which lists local food farm shops which some people might find interesting:
https://www.bigbarn.co.uk/ (Like to come home with goodies too!)
  • Thanks Eenymeeny for the bigbarn link. Found a farm shop close by that I didn't know exsisted.
  • Just remembered a lovely little cafe which is about halfway up Newgate St in Morpeth on the left. You have to look for it as it's through an archway, behind the shops. They do lovely traditional cooked lunches as well as the usual tea/ coffee/ cake/ scone assortment at reasonable prices. The staff are always friendly and efficient. It's always been busy when we've been, which is a good sign!
While you're there check out a community garden a couple of yards further on. A lovely spot to relax in if you want a quick break from the shopping and prefer to take your own lunch! (Sorry, can't remember the name of the cafe but there is usually a sign on the main street to direct you)
  • I can recommend the cafe at the Bowes Museum in Barndard Castle.
You don't have to pay to go in the museum to get access.

  • If you get as far down as Co Durham/Yorkshire border, Mainsgill Tea Rooms and Farm Shop on A66 about 4 miles from Scotch Corner is lovely, great food/coffee/cakes and fabulous meat in the farm shop too.
Look forward to hearing of others recommendations.
  • Thanks for the replies. There are quite a few places that I haven't heard of and have lived in the North East all of my life. Please keep posting
I'm thinking of marking them on a map to keep in the car! Not very hitech eh? Maybe a list with the postcodes for the satnav might be better...
Today we've been to Tynemouth market, held in the lovely revamped Victorian railway/Metro Station (9-4 Saturdays and Sundays) I think that it's greatly improved, with lots of craft-y and foodie stalls as well as bric a brac, books etc. Well worth a visit.

  • Not strictly a coffee shop but Barter Books in Alnwick (Northumberland) is a great place to go. It's an old train station which has been converted to a second hand bookshop with a cafe and coffees cost about 60p in an honesty box. Pets are allowed inside too. There's also the Alnwick castle and gardens pretty much next to it (where Harry Potter was filmed) which is also a great day out.
  • Thanks EeViL_WeEvil I've been to Barter Books it is nice, even has the old-fashioned station toilets if I remember rightly I'll make sure we visit next time we're in Alnwick. Haven't been into Alnwick castle since going on a school trip many moons ago. It's very expensive since it's revamp isn't it though?
We visited a coffee shop in Galgate, Barnard Castle recently. Called No 3. (Almost on the corner, opposite the post office) Good food, clean premises and served with a smile. Heartily recommended. (We walked out of another cafe in Barnie because it seemed that we were invisible! )

  • Thanks mintymoneysaver, hadn't heard of them...will add them to my list
Been meaning to add Castaways Tea Shop at Seaton Sluice for some time. We've visited a few times and always found the food and service to be very good.
Plenty of nearby parking available. (We followed it with a walk along the coast to kid ourselves that we'd negated the lovely coffee and cakes!)

  • Running fox at Felton new favorite you have to book usually downstairs but there is an upstairs now for walking just ask if they have a table. It's Ј15 cream tea for two you get to choose a sandwich each quite big one a slice of pie a slice of quiche a fruit scone with Jane and clotted cream to her to oil a cake they have great big slices of loads of cakes you look at the bakery counter and choose one you like and unlimited tea or coffee p
  • Not sure if it does coffee but https://www.quilliambrothers.com/ does nice tea, it's near the Haymarket in Newcastle.
Nice place inside and I like the handmade signs and things.
  • Thanks ohbilly, looks very interesting! Will give it a try next time we're in Newcastle
We've just been to Paxton House near Berwick. Georgian House with lots of Chippendale furniture and oil paintings on show. A lovely relaxed guided tour followed by a stroll around the extensive grounds. You can walk along the side of the river Tweed in England, looking at Scotland on the other bank. Of course, we followed the walk in the Stables tearoom with coffee and cake which was delicious.
The guide told us that, like a lot of other places, they need more visitors and I would heartily recommend it. Only 3 miles from the A1.

  • I'm not sure if you travel towards Northallerton but Roots Farm shop and cafe is always on my list
'Roots Farmshop & Cafe are part of a rural working dairy and arable farm just outside of East Rounton village near Northallerton, North Yorkshire, not far from the A19'
