A question about : Reclaiming Student Loan Charges

hi everyone,

as the title suggests. i was wondering if the same can be done with the charges that student loans charge for missing a payment/arrears etc?

Best answers:

  • In short - Yes!
  • Hi
I also intend to claim back my charges. Did you amend the standard letter and send it to the usual Glasgow address?
    Thanks and good luck!
  • I was wondering if there is any possiblity that I could make a claim for charges from a loan. I have a loan from the students loans company and over my student life I managed to incure many charges.
Would it be possible to claim back any charges from the student loans company and if you know anyone that has been successful
    Thanks
  • Has anyone tried to claim from the student laons company? Any advice much appreciated.
  • No-one seems to have back with any stories regarding this.
  • Hi
sorry if this has already been covered somewhere but as I'm new could someone indulge me and tell me if this reclaiming bank charges applies to the student loans company - they have screwed me over the years with charges for letters, arrears on payments i didn't know I was supposed to be making etc. etc.
    any advice would be appreciated!
    best wishes
    J xxx
  • A question for all former students who may know the answer.
I left university in 1999 following completing my course, once back home I began working as a chef, low money, long hours, and deferred my loan every year because I was below the payment threshold.
A couple of years ago I had an accident which necessitated time off work (and still does) and had to continue to defer my loan. Unfortunately my deferment form was lost in the post, and the SLC put charges, and lots of them onto my account before it was sorted.
My question is, can I claim those chrages back in the same way as with a bank account? When they charge they do it "properly", Ј30 here, Ј25 there, and I am now in a position where I have to try to pay that back as well as other bills whilst on Incapacity benefit. It is crippling me financially, to go along with the physical problems.
  • I'd like to know the answer to this as well. Is there anyone out there who has successfully claimed back student loan charges? A few years ago my boyfriend was very ill and they whacked him with charges here and there for just sending out letters (very like bank charges) because he hadn't sorted out his deferment properly (his head was in a bit of a mess!)
Grateful if anyone can shed some light...
  • In case anyone is interested, there is a big section on the consumer action group website with people who have successfully claimed back their student loans (I've just been researching!)
Right then - I'm going to get started on my boyf's behalf. I'll let you know how I get on (would be good to get the info on this website too). Maybe there could be a "reclaiming charges from other institutions" section on this site, just like the cag?
  • Okie dokie, have sent off the first letter asking for details of the charges incurred. I do actually know how much they amount to (Ј172.36) but I'd rather do it all officially and know exactly what they were for. Especially since boyf thinks he never received any of these letters they were supposedly charging for (at Ј20 a pop!)
  • i know i'm a bit late of the mark with charges but i can't seem to find on the forum if i can claim back student loan charges. They are worse than anybody!
    Thanks in advance
  • No, as it's public money which is being used for the administration on your account.
  • but is it not a company now and not government owned so how is it public money?
surely if the admin cost is over Ј12 then they can't impose it? isn't this what all the fuss is about anyway?
  • What do they charge for? I have never been charged on my student loan
  • letters being sent out Ј15 and ther's a Ј20 fee admin
  • sent my deferment forms with pay slips and so on - as i wasn't earning above the threshold. posted the forms in July and then went abroad in September. Didn't hear anything from them saying "we have not received your deferment forms" or "now we will start taking payments". When I came back from doing voluntary service abroad I contacted them to find out my balance and give my new address and found out I had racked up 4 months worth of charges for missed payments.
now i felt pretty mad about this so I looked through my records and found the orange recorded delivery slip and checked on the royal mail website - which said the forms had been delivered and signed for in July.
This was Honours student loans - i think SLC sold my loan on at some point a few years ago.
... one final comment to those who think people shouldn't be able to claim back student loan charges - the government lends out the money and gets it back with interest - is there really a good case for charging 20 quid a pop to send a letter on top of that? those who are older than me got grants from the govt and didn't have to pay them back - and guess what is being proposed at the moment... you guessed it - grants.
