A question about : putting curls and volume into my hair

I am looking for inspiration.. title=Smile My hair is looking a bit flat these days (ok it doesn't help that I'm needing to wear a winter hat outdoors at the moment which seems to squash it down..) and I am trying to think of ways to get some curl and volume back into my hair.

I thought of 2 things: maybe heated rollers or a body wave. I am not sure I am brave enough to go for the latter option just yet, as I don't think perms are very 'in' these days and the younger stylists maybe don't have that much experience of doing them. I have heard horror stories of people coming out looking like a poodle title=ROTFL Not quite the look I am aiming for.

My hair's naturally neither straight nor curly, if that makes sense, and it's not that long at the moment - between chin and shoulder length. It seems everyone's using straighteners these days, so I might be a bit out of sync with everybody else by wanting curls and volume, but straightened hair really does not suit me.

Does anyone else here use rollers or heated rollers? If so could you recommend me any? Or if anyone's had a bodywave did that work for you and was it very expensive?

Best answers:

  • I used to have perms up until about 4 years ago. I went to Toni and Guy and the woman said they always ensure they have 1 person in the salon who is fully trained. I liked the results a lot-in they used to do big rollers and it was never poodle-ish.
I then discovered my hair actually has a natural wave, and now I dry it with a diffuser and curl cream then add a curl souflee thing when it's dry. It has added loads of body to my hair, although I have to do it every day for it to look really good.
  • It's good to hear someone else wears their hair curly and it's not just me I wouldn't like to think how much Toni & Guy would charge for a perm (their haircuts are expensive enough!) but it is worth getting it done properly.
I haven't used a diffuser for many years, lol, but I used to when I had permed hair back in the 80s and 90s.
I might go for some heated rollers, and if I like the results I'll think about having a body wave done. These TREsemme roller sets on amazon look alright:

  • I use the Babyliss Big Hair, it really gives my hair volume at the roots and makes it look like I've had a big bouncy blow dry - there are loads of tutorials on youtube! I also have a 'waving wand' (mine is Remington) which gives me curls that are a bit bigger and a bit more natural looking!
