A question about : £10 free from Egg

/ Insert From Martin: The following is the original post (which I've updated as it's now £10. Below it I've added notes on 'how to grab the £10 with the minimum hassle'. A previous offer gave £15 so the first couple of pages of replies relate to that offer but it's worth reading through the questions and answers as they're often asked.

More details and analysis

It's a great spot. £10 and you needn't apply for any products or impact your credit score in any way. The Egg Money Manager is actually quite a handy little tool it allows you to monitor all accounts in one places. However for those who are interested I thought I would jot down a few notes.

How to get the £10 if you don't want the Money Manager

If you don't want to use the Money Manager, then don't bother to add all your acccounts, simply add just one non-Egg account. This could be an old defunct credit card that you no longer use.

Whatever it is, you'll qualify for the £10. And if you really don't like it, then once you've got the £10, then delete that account too, with the cash now in your pocket.

How long will this offer last?

This offer is on again, until the 30 September 2006, but has been extended before so there's no guarantee it will end this month, but i wouldn't gamble on it.

So why does Egg offer this?

There are a number of reasons, though of course this is assuming you are using it properly not just my short cut route!

i. It captures Egg customers. Users of this service are now much more likely to return to the Egg site more often. Thus it can commincate with you, you see its adverts and its promotions and it hopes to gain business.

ii. It knows your products. Now it knows what you've got it can try and offer you 'its own versions' at a better rate. Most good MoneySavers will be beating these anyway so this isn't an issue. And it can't delve into your accounts to analyse your use, it simply looks bluntly at the products you have to see if they can be beaten.

This is my first post so be nice....

Egg are giving £10 to egg customers who sign up for Egg Money Manager and add a non egg account.

Basically Egg Money Manager is Egg's software to view and manage all your bank accounts online. I use it and have for ages so I can't take advantage of the free £10! But it's really easy to use, saves the hassle of signing into lots of different internet banking sites and is very secure.

All you have to do is download money manager from Egg, add a non egg account (which is really easy to do) and you'll get credited with £10!

You should see a little promo for the money manager and the £10 on the left of the web page when you click above.

  • hi and dont worry every one is pretty kind on here!
Have seen the egg offer myself and for some reason I feel a little bit uncomfortable with Egg knowing exactly what is going on with the rest of my accounts. Maybe its a bit cynical but they must have a motive involving more sales!
Having said that Ј10 is better in our pockets
  • I did this and got the Ј10 very quickly and easily - fantastic
  • A few weeks ago when logging into my Barclays online banking, a message was shown saying they had changed their terms and conditions because of these services.
If I remember correctly it said they would not be liable for any online fraud if they found out you had registered their account with one of these services.
  • I have both egg and Barclays online - Ickle_Steve is quite right about Barclays not being liable for online fraud if the account is registered with one of these services. I too was wary about putting my bank account on the egg money manager even before Barclays changed their terms, which was why I didn't set it up. When the offer of Ј10 came I set it up and added a different credit card (that I haven't used since I transferred the balance to a 0%). I got the Ј10 and will probably remove the other credit card shortly.
  • Great Spot, Ј10 for 30 secs work...very pleased!
  • I got an email from Egg the other day, saying I have not used my card in a long time and they give credit my account with Ј25 if I take the card out for shopping...
if only I can remember where I put the card...search search search!!!
  • How safe (or otherwise) is this service? The thing is, I rather like the idea of having a programme that I can use to manage my accounts. If the general consensus is that the Egg Money Manager is not to be trused, is there any independent software available that will do the same thing (free if possible!). Thanks.
  • OK first Peter, that's exactly what i thought I had done with explaining why Egg offers it
    Quote:
  • From what I understand with Egg's Money Manager, you enter your other bank/credit card details, INCLUDING USERNAME AND PASSWORD, and whilst using Egg you can then view all of the money from ALL accounts.
So what happens when someone breaks into Egg's computers, you are then giving them ALL of your details from ALL of your accounts.
RESULT: All of your money disappears, and with Banks not providing you fraud protection when you open up all of your accounts up to third parties, and NO WAY of getting your money back.
Simply forget the free Ј10, as you could lose thousands.
  • Am I missing something? When I try to register it goes to a log-in screen and as I haven't got a password it won't let me in.
  • Money Manager is available to Registered Users only!
  • Doh - silly me
  • Your account details for other banks are only stored on your own PC (encrypted), not on Egg's servers.
See the Frequently Asked Questions at https://new.egg.com/visitor/0,,3_4881...w_1021,00.html
  • I added an account but had to do so via IE6 as Money Manager does not recognise firefox. Sent Egg email to ask them to have a look at this.
    John
  • perfect thanks - Ill take Ј10, I figure enough of these companies will have enough things in place to cover any fraud etc..
  • I would suggest that everyone only uses this service for accounts they don't really use.
A Ј10 "gift" from Egg is an extremely cheap way to gain access to people's bank balances, outstanding loans, credit card balances, etc.
Call me cynical, but I wouldn't touch this with a barge pole.
