A question about : Prices of next-gen games

I've become accustomed to picking up PS3/360 games for Ј30 around or just after release, however the prices for the latest games seems to be around the Ј40 - Ј45 mark.

Will this be the new norm or will prices start to creep down as the number of next gen console users increases?

I'm struggling to remember how expensive the PS3/360 games were around release, but do vaguely remember a friend of mine paying Ј65 - Ј70 for N64 games when it first came out.

Best answers:

  • I don't think Ј40 isn't too bad for a game for a next gen console.
  • at asda they seem to hover between Ј45 and Ј53. i noticed in game most ps4 games were Ј60. i spent a period of the early 90's paying silly money for games. i wont be doing that again. i think its obvious that the second hand game market will be bigger than ever if they continue to charge silly money for new games. i think microsoft realised this and that was probably the thinking when they initially wanted to stop the sale of second hand games on the xbox one.
  • i have a few megadrive boxes still with Ј39.99 on them...eep!
  • Development budgets have gone up somewhat, Rockstar allegedly spent 265 Million dollars creating GTAV which is well into blockbuster movie budget territory.
  • Microsoft would probably have gotten away with their always on policy if gamers had thought the download prices would compete with Steam. In the last few months I've spent about Ј20 on steam and have 12 games, including 3 'big' games (Tomb Raider, Bioshock Infinite and Sleeping Dogs). Those prices are so low I no longer care about second hand, I can afford to take a punt on a game without worrying too much about whether its good enough. At Ј60 a game that isn't the case for most people.
I doubt the xbox one or ps4 games will reduce in price for some time though. Firstly there aren't many second hand games in circulation yet, and secondly the market is tiny so the publishers are not going to sell many games on these consoles for a while. Both of those will improve over time I imagine.
  • The thing is Ј45 is not too bad for a next-generation console game given the massive development costs.....however that is less the case with straight conversions over from previous models which are less value for money.
If you compare say Fifa09 with Fifa14 on the PS3 - the difference in quality and gameplay is massive...... but both games are subject to exactly the same hardware limitations. My point is that it will take designers 3 or 4 years to really start expoliting the full potential of the PS4 which is technically streets ahead of the PS3. In the meantime, a conversion game such as Fifa 14 for the PS4 is really not that much better than the PS3 version.
  • Yeah that is probably not a great amount. This could actually prove to be nice as compared to the other options available.
  • What? Ps3 and Xbox 360 games were 39.99 when they came out, they are only around the 29.99 mark now as the consoles are 7 years old and the next gen is out, 39.99 is and always has been the going rate for a new console game
44.99 is a little more agreed, but as mentioned above, N64 and SNES games used to cost 59.99 or so, so with the rate of inflation over the last 10 years, you could even argue they are a lot cheaper
