A question about : Phone scam
Just got this warning emailed to me, don't know if it's true!
Grampian Police warn of telephone scam - at work and at home
The scenario is:- Your phone rings and you receive a recorded message;
"Congratulations. We are calling to advise you that you have won an all
expenses paid trip to an exotic destination. Please press 9 now to hear
further details." If you press 9, you'll be connected to a premium line
that bills in the region of Ј20 per minute. If you press 9 and connect, even
if you disconnect immediately, the other end will stay connected for a
minimum of 5 minutes and will cost you Ј100. The next part of the call,
which lasts for 11 minutes asks you to key in your postcode and house
number and, after a further two minutes, responds with the
message; "Sorry, you are not one of the lucky winners." and disconnects,
adding a further Ј260 to your phone bill! The message in such calls varies
enormously and can include well known brand names and company titles to add
authenticity. Don't be caught out. The only safe solution is to hang up if
you receive such a call.
Best answers:
- This is a hoax.
See this thread.
https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/cgi...num=1071329841 - You have been hoaxed peat!
There are no premium rate lines costing Ј20/min!
And you cannot connect to a premium rate line by pressing '9' whilst on another call!
