A question about : A payment a day............

............makes the debt go away!!!

I need to start getting rid of my debts again. All my money seems to go on bills and stuff at the moment but I thought if I could just take 1 debt and make a payment to it each and every day then it will soon disappear (in theory!!).

So I am going to try this with my smallest debt first which is my Barclaycard. It currently stand at Ј389.90.

So I will HAVE to make a payment to this card every day, even if it is just a penny.

Today, I have made a Ј5 payment from my debit card and another Ј8 payment via internet banking so my current total is now Ј376.90.

If anyone wants to join me then you are more than welcome .

• what a good idea, ive got internet banking and might do this with you, but to clear my credit card, the other 2 debts are overdrafts and i dont want to ring up everyday and ask them to reduce my overdraft by a penny...lol, although could be a laugh!

• I like this idea too, maybe not every day for me as getting to the right places can be a nightmare, but every week i could use all the spare change in my change pot to pay another bit off the credit card, or any leftovers from my daily budget can be used. Thank you for a good idea!!!! I'm really struggling with how to pay my debts back (even though they are tiny in comparison to some) but this may make a slight difference!

• Its a good idea. I like it. I had thought where I used to spend Ј1.50 per day on 2 bottles of Coke - and I am trying to reduce the coke completely I could make a payment of the money I save to one of my debts.
  I think I might start to do this now. Well done.

• I really like this idea too. My 'debt' is my extra mortgage that we used to get an extension and house repairs. We have a one account so if I leave money in rather than spending it then it reduces the debt. So, i'll join your challenge by not buying things I don't need therefore reducing the debt (if that makes sense!!).
  My first saving is a refund for Ј174 that I wasn't expecting....I was going to use the money for a treat but that's the start of me paying back the debt. So money saved - Ј174!! xx
• Oooh i've just thought - this will help me shed a few pounds too, if i'm not allowed to spend money on non essentials I can't buy carp to eat!!! That's the theory anyway! xx
• Welcome all .
  If you didn't want to physically make a payment off the card/loan/savings etc every day then you could put some money in a pot everyday instead and then maybe pay this money off once a week/fortnight/month - as long as you put something towards it everyday then it counts .
  This could work for all sorts of things, loans, credit cards, savings, mortgages, holiday funds etc etc - everyone is welcome .

• Ok so card currently stands at 333.98 - will be aiming at paying £13.35 a day off the card so that it is clear by the end of August! Just transferred my first payment over so balance is now -
  £320.63 x x
• Like this idea - even though I am doing the £10 a day challenge (not very successfully as yet!) it often happens that the extras made don't find their way to the debt repayment. So I will have a go at this and plan to pay an average of £10 a day extra off the debts - with minimum of a pound, maximum of the whole lot (should I win the lottery!)

  It's day 2 and I have just paid off Ј1.90 via internet banking. Thought I would round it off a bit. I haven't got much money at the moment though so that will have to do for today.
  Therefore, my card is down to Ј375 .

• Whata good idea. Can you do this post every week? I can't join in this week as my mortgage is due to go out Friday and I don't have enough in the bank to pay that .
  but hopefully next week, once the next pay check goes in then I could afford to do this.
  I am guessing this is on top of your usual payment to the credit card?

• Hi Emily - I am off to hunt out mu purse/bag etc for my 13.35. I have a cheque for a fiver to bank so only 8.35 to find for todays payment and I should have that lurking at the bottom of my bag! x
• Ok just paid my 13.35 for today so my balance now stands at Ј307.28 x

  I just went to check my bank and had 127.45 so was going to pay the Ј7.45 but then when I went on barclaycard my balance was Ј208.00 so I paid Ј8 to it That's down to Ј200 now, it was Ј334.40 this time last month yay!!
