A question about : Parliamentary Motion Specifically To Support This Site

Updated 25 Feb 2009

PARLIAMENTARY MOTION SPECIFICALLY TO SUPPORT THIS SITE.

In February 2005, there was an early day motion in parliament to commend the work of this site.

That this House commends the activities of those persons and groups dedicated to assisting members of the public get value for money in purchases, insurance, overdrafts and mortgages; and recognises that money saving experts like Martin Lewis at https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/ provides, on a not-for-profit basis, an incentive for ordinary consumers to pressurise large providers and financial institutions to hold down prices to the general public.

Note The above is copied from the initial motion, quite a few more MPs added their names to it since.

See the motion itself (sometimes that doesn't work, if not go to this one and scroll down to number 564)

From Martin:

I knew nothing about it until someone e-mailed me to tell me. It was very surprising, so thanks to the MPs of all parties who supported it, it is appreciated. There was a slight technical glitch in that it said the site is 'not-for-profit', where as it does make money, albeit in a way we hope is still socially beneficial (see how this site is financed)

Since then the site has grown enormously, with millions now using it every month, and rather than little more than a one man band, there's a whole team behind it. Read about MoneySavingExpert's history

Since then there have been many accolades and awards for the site. Here are just a few...
Help up as a model for 'the Power of information

In a report out in Summer 2007, the site has been held up as a model of how to reach people and allow interaction in the government’s review ‘The Power Of Information’. It goes without saying that I’m chuffed to bits that the site is included and held in such high regard.

Read a blog on it: First a call from no. 10

  • Without being corny or cheesey, you really deserve it mate. Well done on everything. I have never heard you say anything stupid or pointless. I have read your book, and almost every word you have written in your articles and guides.
Such an eye opener, and even though most of it common sense, it is so blindingly obvious its embarassing not to have thought about it before!
Also, I guess it would be extremely tempting for some to use their power and influence to make massive amounts of money in back-handers from the various lenders to recommend their products, but we all know you would never do that, and in todays society, that alone has to be congratulated.
    Sir, I salue you!
  • I agree with all the other posts, congratulations! The recognition is well deserved.
  • Brilliant Martin, nice one.
  • Congratulations! Not only do you have fans in high places, you also bridge party divides.
In the list of people that signed the motion, there were members of (in no particular order):
    Ulster Unionist
    Democratic Unionist
    Labour
    Lib Dem
    Conservatives
Maybe you should think about becoming an M.P. You'd get tons of votes
  • Thanks for telling us, I would never have known otherwise.
I'm absolutely delighted for Martin and the team.
