A question about : paper driving licence

I have the old style paper driving licence do i need the new photographic one when renting in the U S A?

Best answers:

  • no, if you only have the paper licence then it's accepted - it is the only licence you have. You'll need your passport as well.
true story: once when in the US I forgot my photo card licence in my hotel room, but had my paper counterpart and my passport...I just passed those two over and hoped it would be overlooked that I should also have a photocard with the batch of documents...and it was. I don't recommend trying it this way on purpose, but I assumed that the agent at the desk just assumed I only had a paper licence and that is what I was giving her.
  • Ditto!! Just had a week in LA - my husband had his paper part but not the plastic c/c - as I have an old paper licence it looked like it would be me driving but he handed over his paper part and passport and it went through.
Not something we would like to repeat - we (well me) kept wondering how "legal" we were.....
