A question about : Pancakes...How do you make yours?

Yes yes we can all go to the supermarket and buy them readymade (not very MSE!) or the packet mixes. What I'd like know is if anyone has any unusual recipes for pancakes (be that gluten free/vegan friendly or different ingredients they like to use) and to share and maybe add a pic or two of the finished masterpiece? I'm going to have a go at making some for myself and my LO for brekkie tomorrow...wish me (and the ceiling) luck! title=Big

Best answers:

  • It depends how many you're making them for. If for a couple 4 oz of plain flour, an egg & 1/2 pint of milk. If more double the recipe.
I made some last night & they were delicious.
  • I use Delia's recipe which is I think 100g flour, half a pint of milk and two eggs. Far too good to only eat once a year though.
The best filling is honey or golden syrup yum yum.
  • I have no idea how they get made but they do taste delicious when I find them on me plate.
  • It doesn't matter what the amounts are, I just add more of one until I have "some"...
Flour, eggs, milk (or half water, half milk).
Just plain for me, no sugar or lemon thank you. I'm boring, but prefer the taste of the ingredients rather than the condiments!
  • The last few years, I bought Aunt Bessie's American pancake mix and I couldn't find it this year. Bough her chocolate pancake mix.
I find our pancakes got a horrible texture to them.
  • My pancakes and they were yummy! They're the American style and made with almond milk rather than semi skimmed. I shall be making them again! Had a whole load of fresh fruit that needed using and I drizzled some honey on top too mmmmmmm!!
  • If and when I ever make pancakes, I use mum's recipe for what you southerners call Scotch pancakes.
    100g SR flour
    25g Sugar
    150ml Milk
    1 Egg
About a table spoonful onto a hot griddle then turn over when the bubbles rise to cover the surface.
Taste best when hot, straight off the griddle.
I like them with butter or jam but will use honey or treacle if I have any in the house
  • I'm a great tosser but sometimes hit the ceiling.
  • Pancakes have to be one of the most easy desserts to make from scratch at home, why anyone would bother buying the pre-made crap and as for the packet mix which is also crap just shows how lazy some people are if they are that lazy I'm surprised they don't want them pre-digested too!
  • I use:
    1/2 cup plain flour
    1/2 cup milk
    1 egg
Tsp each sugar and baking powder
    Pinch salt
This makes nice fluffy American style pancakes and will give 6-8 small pancakes maybe 10cm across. Never tried it as big pancakes though, my kiddies like small ones and they dip in the syrup you can buy to top ice-cream.
  • Does everyone have dinner and then pancakes for dessert, or do you just have pancakes as your main meal?
I always have pancakes instead of dinner but I've seen a few people mention having them for pudding.
  • I use Doves gluten free plain flour, 2 eggs, milk and lard for frying. I like to have them with orange juice and sugar when they are done. I'm not having any today but we have them fairly often anyway, they are not a once a year treat in this house.
  • I never measure stuff out - just make it up until the batter looks right.
Growing up pancakes were the tea, so the only course. 2-3 was a typical serving. Mum'd make the pancakes and slide them off onto our plates on a one by one basis. So you'd eat one, then go and stand by the cooker waiting for the next one. She made a bowl of batter and once it was gone that was our lot.
We just used to have a sprinkling of white sugar on them. Nothing more.
  • I always have drop scones instead, as i find them more filling (and easy to flip). I use this recipe:

  • A magazine I get has issued a challenge for people to make these extravagant pancakes using a recipe taken from 1758 edition of the Complete Housewife. There is a prize of a book if you make them, take a photo and write up about making them. I'm looking forward to seeing if anyone takes up the challenge, sure there will be some people who try it. I don't think I'd be able to move for a week if I followed this recipe....
