A question about : Oscars

I have seen Birdman and The Grand Budapest Hotel.
They are absolutely terrible films - particularly Birdman which I gave up on about half way through.
Films are supposed to be entertaining; these are truly (text removed by MSE Forum Team) yet win top awards.
Hard to fathom how Oscars are assessed.

Best answers:

  • There's nothing more likely to give me the boak than an Oscar acceptance speech, and Eddie Redmayne's proved no exception.
  • Forget his speech, his acting in the film deserved his Oscar.
  • Of the nominations the only one I've seen is Grand Budapest Hotel, which I enjoyed very much but was hardly one of the greats.
When Theory of Everything and Birdman appear as rentals I'll probably watch them because they sound interesting.
The greatest shame is that the Lego Movie didn't get a nomination.
  • They're 'absolutely terrible films' in your opinion.
The Dark Knight Rises is a pants film imo, yet many liked it. I thought Skyfall was that bad I watched it twice to make sure - but it was the plot/storyline that I really didn't like. The film itself is well made.
The recent Lone Ranger, Prometheus, etc are truly 'bad' films imo - and that of many others - and should be deleted from history. Imo.
    It's all subjective. Imo.
  • Yet more from the backslapping sycophant brigade telling each other how good they are just to boost each others already overinflated egos!
  • Hi,

  • Really? I thought The Grand Budapest Hotel was brilliant and very different from most of the films they churn out these days.
I don't really care who wins what at the Oscars though, but I do like looking at the dresses. Scarlett Johansson and Patricia Arquette are probably my favourites this year.
  • I'm always amazed how seriously people take the awards. Can't comment on any of the winners as I haven't seen them, but you need to bear in mind that not only is it subjective but its a mainstream award for Hollywood films.
  • I hate the media going on about the dresses and not bothering with the awards themselves
  • I enjoyed Birdman, thought Michael Keaton and Edward Norton were great.
Interstellar was up for a few things and although it didn't win any "major" Oscar it gets rave reviews on IMDB. I gave up watching about 15 minutes before the end of it because I didn't care about the characters at all. Movie looked quite nice though.
  • The Oscars is the movie industry's trade fair.
People turn up with their people to swop contact details with other people's people etc.
Oscar nominations/winnings simply give them bargaining chips to negotiate their next asking price.
It looks like female parts will be getting more this year.
