A question about : OS from Sunny Suffolk and east Anglia

I've been using this forum since November and still don't feel I 'know' anyone. Was wondering if it may be good to have region threads as well as the daily OS thread/ Flylady etc.
It could make meet ups easier and also we would be able to share local OS information. For example I want to explore using farm shops/ independent shops more and could really do with some recommendations.
Would this be useful to others too?

Best answers:

  • Yeh I would be intrested! Im from Essex and it would be nice to get recommendations on good butchers, farmers markets etc near me
  • I'm from the North East, but I'd love to have OS people locally to have coffee mornings etc with.
I travel to the Ipswich area about once a month and there is a lovely shop called the Friday Street Shop it's near Snape on the way to Aldeburgh, I always pick up some veg from there.
  • I originate from Bury St. Eds. THough I am not there now I know Bury Market is good. Saturdays and I think Wednesdays. Growing our own veg was the best thing.
I will ask my mum as she still works in Bury
  • Hi vivw,what a great idea!
I feel the East is always a bit..well....left out,we are on Norfolk/Suffolk borders, but everybody is either London or the North,we are stuck out on a limb here aren't we.
    Look forward to your thread.

Whereabouts on the border are you?
Not going to say exactly, but we live in a tiny village just North of Beccles, for obvious reasons (debt) I won't say

  • Well, if you have specific questions for your area, you could always start a specific thread to ask them...
I started one for my local area and it turned out there were loads of people who knew the local Old Style shopping haunts! The thing is though, to comply with forum guidelines you need to be pretty careful to keep the subject matter Old Style or you risk having your thread moved to the "Local Moneysaving" boards (where I occasionally ask a question and nobody ever replies!)
I think there are a few in the Suffolk/East Anglia area though - squeakyand black-saturn come to mind.
  • livinginhope: Thats okay...wasn't trying to be too nosy. Just if we know roughly where we all are it makes sharing information easier.
can't say I know that area that well.
In the 70's I did teaching practise at Halesworth and also used to attend the Albion fairs that were in that area.
    Welcome on board...
  • I am in Essex so can try to help with info on shops around here. Wish I was in Norfolk or Suffolk though, have spent many lovely hols on the Broads.
  • Essex here too (unsurprisingly).
Used to be South essex now more mid essex. Live in rural area with loads of farmers markets and shops nearby.
  • [QUOTE=vivw]nickinoodle : whereabouts in Essex are you? Although now living in Suffolk [Ipswich to be precise] I was brought up in Essex nr Billericay. My family are in Billericay, basildon and Chelmsford.
Hi, I live in Basildon actually
  • I'm a Norfolk girl, and would love to join in
  • Hi and welcome to all those who have posted since I've been shopping - [susieb, Essex-girl,catznine,
I've just been out on my first non-supermarket shop. Living as I do on the outskirts of Ipswich on an 1980's development, there are no local shops, but I thought I would have a drive out and see what I could find. One set of shops[2 miles away] I found, were awful, so I decided against them.
The second set, [1 and a half miles away]I found a convenience store but their range was very limited esp of baking ingredients, but I did buy a local paper. Found a lovely butchers where I bought a pork chop and some chicken breasts [ very competitively priced] and had a chat with the assistant and another customer - so civilised. The greengrocers was well stocked and I bought some daffs and a red pepper [didn't need much!] but unfortunately the assistant was more concerned with talking on his mobile than me.
The third set [approx 1 mile away] had no butchers or greengrocer and the grocers was a Spar, so will probably use that for milk etc
This afternoon I plan to go to Felixstowe about 6 miles away to see what that would be like for shopping. Has a pleasant high street so might be okay. Am hoping to find a good fish store, as we love fish...will report back.
  • Hi, What a good thread! I'm from Essex as well. My main gripe is that there is no greengrocer in our local shops. I can't visit the local market as I have other commitments on market day and they have packed up before I get home. It really is a case of Tesco killing off the high street.
