A question about : O/S Daily Sunday 22nd February 2015

O/S Daily Sunday 22nd February 2015

This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!

As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or SLOW internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred. When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.

Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “hi everyone, hope everyone’s well” is fine.

  • Morning everyone
Birthday wishes to those celebrating a birthday, hope you have a great day x
Hugs and get well wishes to those that want/need them.
Now light, bright, sunny and clear. Cold and frosty though. Load in WM.
DH and myself now up enjoying first peaceful cuppa's. Both boys still in their pits.
Had a lovely day out yesterday, was nice to get a look at the new designs of caravan and motorhome, although we're very happy with the caravan that we've got we weren't looking to purchase a new one. There wasn't as many accessory stands as we'd hoped but it was still a good day. We got back in good time with a good journey there and back, and we went out for dinner to celebrate bro's birthday - went to a restaurant we've never been to before and the food was beautiful, so was a really enjoyable evening.
Today will be a chilled day, we're having roast beef for lunch so will do the normal trimmings with it. Will get all the pack ups etc done too, as it's back to work, school and normal tomorrow. I will just chill and look at the brochure's etc that I collected yesterday, those that I don't want to keep will go straight into the recycling - at least that way they won't be laying around for ages adding to the clutter.
When we go out I need to fill my car up with petrol, as we took my car yesterday instead of the big one.
    Have peaceful Sunday's everyone x
    Keep safe and well x

  • Morning everyone, and thanks for starting the thread mmlc,
Been MIA for far too long and really need to get back on the MSE wagon. I have just returned from a school trip and a holiday to the two most expensive cities in Europe!
I went on a school trip to Geneva to CERN to see the particle accelerators and actually got to go down into the tunnel to see one of the HUGE detectors. It was amazing and a chance of a lifetime as the tunnel is now closed until late 2018!
I then went on a long saved for family trip to Oslo. It was an amazing 4 days but fiendishly expensive, I don't know how normal people live there.
Now it is back to OS ways and saving for the next holiday.
Hugs to all in need especially LW, Hilstep, Elona and Judi.
    Have a lovely day everyone.
  • Morning everyone.
Good to see you back moorhen, your CERN trip sounds exciting.
Last night there was a beautiful crescent moon with one bright star under it in a dark blue sky. I tried to take a picture with my little camera though it didn't come out too well. I really should get a different one.
EDIT - here's the pic, not as bad as I first thought.

Burnt my hand yesterday, so stupid of me. I took a saucepan out of the oven, put it down on the induction hob which started to beep. Instinctively I moved the pan... I then spent most of the afternoon/evening with my hand in a jug of cold water, so most of my hand was freezing whilst a bit of it was red hot. Mind you keeping it in water for hours has really helped and there is no pain now.
We had a bowl of homemade chilli each for lunch (after burning my hand) and then a cheeky pizza for evening meal.
Quiet day ahead as OH has a five hour drive ahead of him, were still lounging in bed nicely.
Hope everyone has a relaxing and enjoyable day.
  • Good Morning everyone and a bright sunny,if chilly, day here in north Kent,Eldest DD is due this morning for her pot of coffee, scrambled eggs and weekly chinwag with me.I get to wait on her, and she gets to be spoilt for an hour or so.
We both win as she has a very busy job during the week, and my little house is a Sunday morning haven away from washing ,ironing ,family and noise .
I am just compiling some recipes for DGS Ben's GF as she likes to bake and I said I would email her some of his favourite cake, biscuit recipes.Bless her she is such a sweetie and they seem to adore each other,oh to be that age again when the sun seems to shine all the time when your in luuurve (even when it rains )
So Melting moment and twinks hob-nob recipes will be winging their way to Norfolk shortly.
My cold is still hanging around a bit but hopefully it will go as the weather gets warmer. We saw some gorgeous crocus yesterday in Norfolk bursting out on the roadsides grassy areas and its such a nice sign that spring will soon be here.I can hear the birds at the moment argueing over who gets to nest in the eves of my house
Hope you all have a great day whatever you are doing
    Cheers chums JackieO xxx
PS CERN sounds amazing moorhen ,glad to 'see' you back again
  • Good morning,
Thank you nmic for starting today's thread.
A really heavy frost here this morning but hopefully it will warm up later.
WM on, there isn't much washing to do but thought I would keep on top of it.
I bought a chicken crown yesterday so that will be for lunch with roast and mashed potatoes, carrots, cabbage, and sage and onion stuffing. Icecream for Himself for afters, yoghurt for me.
DD came to see us yesterday, just the second time she has driven in a year since her operation. She said it was a bit scarey to start with, but she says it is less painful to drive than to walk. Now that she has plucked up courage she will have her independence back and not reliant on us so much.
Elona I am so pleased your Husband is doing so well, and it was good news at the hospital. I know we never take anything for granted but it does sound as though he is doing well. He seems to be eating really well, is he actually putting on much weight?
Jackie it sounds as though you had a lovely day, I love Norwich. I know how you feel abot DGSs GF, I love DGDs BF, he is a lovely young man, always kisses me when he comes in and leaves and always thanks me. I have met his Mum and Dad and they are lovely people as well. It is good to know they are with people who are kind and respect them. It would break my heart if my DGD was with someone who wasn't good to her.
Have a good day everyone and stay warm

  • Morning all. Not sure if I am allowed back on this board as have fallen off the wagon in the last few ........ I've been talking the talk, but not really walking the walk. As husbands van is going to cost more to repair than it is worth we are looking at getting a new to us car, but that will mean a loan which we have avoided for last 5 yrs.
So am back on the OS wagon again. Yesterday planted tomato, cucumber and herb seedlings to grow in conservatory. Today will be looking at cupboards and freezer and making a meal plan for the week. Hope all is well with everyone.
  • Morning all,
Cold and frosty here but bright with a good breeze have the bedding in the wm with another load to go in after will hang them on the line today.
OH gone to the boot sale with instructions to get a bit of beef from the meat man, I was always a bit dubious about buying meat from there but we tried a bit and it really was tasty, so going for a bit of beef today, I have been craving it for a while so hope its good.
We are going to do some ebay listings today and I need to do an online shop ready for next week.
Will do a nice roast for today and cook extra for another one tomorrow when we get in from work.
    Have good days all xx
Elona good news re your DH xx
  • Morning, still in bed OH shows no sign of getting up, so I am staying put.
So pleased to hear that Elona's husband is doing well, you must be relieved.
No idea what the weather is like curtains firmly closed, but judging by the light levels it is bright. No washing until tomorrow, hope the weather holds.
More of the Christmas turkey for supper, I have one more meal sized portion in the freezer, so the Aldi Turkey crown has done us well.
  • Morning all
Been MIA again. Have been moving Dmum into her new bungalow and I am absolutely shattered.
It's lovely though , we scrubbed it top to bottom and moved everything in. We couldn't sort the tele Arial which is a shame but we will get an engineer in on Monday . BIL is going tomorrow to plumb the washer . I think she will be happy there when she settles in , it's warm, clean and easy to manage. We are eb@ying a lot of stuff and we have found several stamp albums so DH is looking to sell those too
Bless her she has been through a lot this last 3 months
Dd2 has borrowed my car to go Loughborough this morning , it's her first time driving on the motorway (m1) so I'm feeling stressed , she is a careful driver but it's the other lunatics
Got lots of washing to do , I've made a start and the house is tidy
Have a good Sunday everyone xx
  • Morning all
Nice to see you Moorhen also esmf, it's always nice to welcome old friends & new.
Molly, sorry to here you ae suffering with BD, glad the 2 westies are helping, waves to LW.
DGD has been up since 7:30, she seems better today, she seemed a bit washed out yesterday, she is currently planting chilies & pepper seeds with hubby, so I'm having a break, we've already done some baking today & we still need to make an apple loaf later & do some card making.
Yesterday we made a stuffed owl, cut out some toddler patterns for the twins & she made some loom bands. She'll be here until 3ish today so plenty of time to do more things, DD works hard to make sure all the children get some one on one time, but we think it's nice for them to have some time with us as they have little or no contact with their grandparents.
We have roast beef for lunch today, yesterday DGD asked for ham & pineapple pizza for tes, I only had plain, but had pineapple in the cupboard & ham n the fridge so they were added to the plain pizza.
Back to work tomorrow, this week has flown by, another DGD to gym cub after work & then DGS to an after school club on Wednesday.
I've started another crochet baby blanket & I'm hoping to get more dressmaking done next week.
    Have a good day everyone.
    Hugs Hester
  • Good Morning everyone, bitingly cold here this morning and with a beautiful coating of frost on everything, glad I'm doing the afternoon hound walk though. DD1 who has been staying for a few days is going home today, He Who Knows is taking her back and staying to replace a couple of fence pannels in her garden which have been battered by our winter weather so just the Dockling and me tonight and I'm having a piece of chicken for tea which I don't normally get to cook as He Who Knows doesn't do 'bird' of any kind. I'm so fed up with all this cold weather I long for some nice warm spring days but I DO know it's only half past February and it will come in its own time, I just wish it would hurry up!!!
Hope you all have a lovely Sunday and something nice happens to make each of you happy, Lyn xxx.
  • Morning all. I don't know where the morning has gone. I was up at silly o'clock (as usual) but seem to have gone from one job to another ever since.
Wonderful news ELONA I know what it's like getting wound up waiting for results. We are back at Leeds Tuesday for Mr TA's 2nd injection. He had the usual bloods last time so they may tell us if they show anything different.
Anyway, because he had no side effects from the 1st injection we have taken the plunge and booked Mon - Fri away from the 2nd March and hope he has no ill effects from the 2nd injection to force us to cancel it. I have booked a lovely hotel near Kendal where we stayed in the autumn. It's got a spa and a pool (and a gym but we won't mention that!!) and only 10 mins from Lake Windermere so the break can be as relaxing or as taxing as we want! Although our days of fell walking are behind us we can still enjoy reasonably flat walking round the lakes etc. It's our no-childminding week so not leaving DD in a dilemma!
Roast beef for lunch and it's smelling lovely. I've got a couple of pieces of bilberry crumble out of the freezer for dessert if we have room for it!
All the DGDs bedding to iron but may leave until tomorrow and have a lazy afternoon!
Have a good day all. xx
  • eldest DDs just been and we had a lovely long chat about anything and everything.Bless her she asked what I'd like for Mum's day and I said actually not a lot as I am happy with everything I have,so she said well there must be a cook book you'd like (forgetting that I have been cooking for well over 60 years )
So I ended up choosing 'We'll eat again' by Marguerite Patten, but I said I only want a used copy as new is silly, and used it quite acceptable for me.
She looked on A%%zon and found it for about Ј3.00 which I was happy withI see no point spending an arm and a leg on a book which will get well used and read and probably covered in flour at some point.Bless her she is a good girl and knows me and my frau frugal ways only too well so apparently its going to ba a part of my Mothers Day gift, along with something else she wouldn't tell me about
Sun is still out although a bit nippy at the moment still.Just going to have some hot soup and pate and crackers for lunch as I go to youngest DDs for Dinner later.
    Enjoy your sunday chums

  • Jackie I have that book and I am sure Lyn has it as well.
    Happy reading and cooking

  • Oh yes I do, in fact I have the 3 in 1 collection published as 'The Jubilee Cookbook' which includes the after the war is ended 'Victory Cookbook' and 'The Post War Kitchen' which covers up to the ending of rationing in the 1950s. Love them, everything I've ever cooked from them has been delicious. I also have a complete shelf of wartime cookbooks including 20 or so originals by Ambrose Heath, a scottish WI book, some repro books from the Telegraph and quit a few pamphlets produced by the carrot marketing board, the potato marketing board, Marmite, Bero, Carnation Milk, Atora Suet etc. which are all very useable and still make dishes acceptable to the modern palate. I love them, it's a fascinating insight into what my parents generation had to cope with!
  • I can recommend Acriflex for burns, it is a cream you can get from the chemist.
DH and I went out for a walk this morning, couldn't persuade the teenagers to come with us, but at least we got some exercise in the fresh air! Did some baking when we got back, a "clear the fridge out" quiche and an apple and mincemeat tart.
Had to choose another holiday cottage as the company rang to say the one we booked for a week in August was now unavailable as it will be having the roof replaced. Luckily our second choice was still available so not too much hassle.
Washing, dishwasher all sorted and rubbish out ready for tomorrow. Roast Pork for dinner.
  • Afternoon all,
Moorhen - your trips sound amazing
Put together the new units for the Lounge which seems to have taken a lot of the day. I've put the stuff back in them, decluttered some unwanted bits and still have lots of space I put the CDs and DVDs back in there although the only CD players we have are in the cars and we have no DVD player :/ I think we are a bit daft!
Back to normal tomorrow after half term although tomorrow is just a training day, for me that means a later start than normal and earlier finish
    Happy Sunday
  • Evening all,
All visitors gone now.....DD2 was very happy with her travel time......5 hrs 10 mins door to door, including filling hire car with petrol, returning said car, flying Dublin to Stansted, train to Tottenham Hale, 10 min taxi ride to Highbury, I never seem to get there that fast!
Cool, rainy day here, Mossy was unwilling to go out, but is now patrolling the back garden looking for a way out.....he loves a run in the fields but not great at coming back, so not allowed with sheep around.
Moorhen, lovely to hear of your trips and plans for more.....OH is becoming more unwilling to travel by the day, I know that airports are a pain, but a book is always helpful to pass the time, we will see later in the year.
Dinner tonight is boiled smoked shank of ham which OH spotted for €1.75 in the supermarket this morning....its been cooked and Mossy has disposed of the bone, cabbage and potato to cook, pudding will be a couple of the raspberry and chocolate brownies DD1 made yesterday. Late breakfast this morning so dinner will be an other hour or so.
We have been promised very cold weather and snow in the coming week....would rather we didnt have snow, as I hate problematic travelling....have lots of food in so not worried on that score but dont like to be confined.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend, stay warm and well.
    Marie
