A question about : O/S Daily Saturday 21st February 2015

O/S Daily Saturday 21st February 2015

This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!

As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or SLOW internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred. When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.

Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “hi everyone, hope everyone’s well” is fine.

Birthday wishes to those celebrating a birthday, hope you have a great day x
Hugs and get well wishes to those that want/need them.
Now getting light, air feels a bit chilly, possibly had a frost. Clear sky though.
DH and myself now up enjoying first peaceful cuppa's - I'm eating my brekkie as I'm on here, we're off out for the day to a an event, it's a 2 hour drive away so we'll be leaving in about 45 minutes. Both boys still in their pits.
Yesterday was ok, did the food shopping but couldn't get 1 item that is now a regular item so that's not so good that such a big SM doesn't carry a basic product. Also thought when I paid it seemed quite expensive as I didn't buy as much as normal and it still came to nearly the same price, when I got home checked my receipt and I'd bought 3 for Ј10 meat deal and the items had all been charged at full price with no discount showing at the bottom of the receipt - rang the store they've checked it out and already told me that they have already received calls from other customers regarding the same thing, so there's obviously a problem, have to take my receipt back to Customer Services next time I go in.
I did also get some baking done, I made a dozen mince pies, a tray of choc chip cookies, a pastry case (this will become either a quiche/bakewell/treacle tart later this week) and I had a big lump of pastry left and didn't quite know what to do with it, so I decided I'd make some cheese straws - a bit different as the pastry was already made, but just rolled it out cut it into straws and then sprinkled grated cheese on top and baked them - they are actually quite nice and I'm really pleased that I didn't just throw the pastry away - which is what I would have done a few months ago. I have a menu plan in place and some extra options for when things don't go to plan or plans change. I'm feeling much clearer and settled in general in myself, I've had a few things rattling round my brain for a while and I seem to have come to a conclusion this last week or so and am starting feel calmer and more settled.
Looking forward to my day out and then dinner out to celebrate my big bro's 50th birthday - it's a bit early but it take's such logistics to get us all together in 1 place!
    Have great Saturday's everyone x
    Keep safe and well x
    nmlc x
  • Good morning everyone
I was up at sparrow's-f*rt this morning so I thought I would start us off. Having a bit of a stressy few days so I am planning a very quiet and peaceful day today. My friend rang last night asking me to make a load of cupcakes and meet her on the beach tomorrow afternoon to welcome a load of charity runners . Sometimes I think she doesn't know me at all . I have fobbed her off but she is very persistent. If I had more notice I would have made her some cakes but there is no way on God's green earth I am going to catch a bus to the next town, walk to the beach and meet a load of strangers! I honestly don't know what she is thinking.
Also, we are having a new roof fitted courtesy of the Housing Association we rent from but it means having scaffolding front and back and it feels so intrusive. The scaffolding is only inches from our toilet and bathroom and it is very disconcerting to have a shower with builders right outside the window. Mind you if they looked in they would probably fall off with fright . Hopefully it will only be for a week or so and they don't work on the weekend so I can wander round in my PJ's today.
Wow, I sound like a right moaning minny, so I will change the subject. I was so so proud of my DD12 yesterday. She has to have a lot of work done at the orthodontist and he fitted this metal spring in her mouth yesterday to force her teeth apart. It looked horrendous though she assured me it wasn't too bad. She is lisping at the moment until she adjusts to it and it is very funny and cute to listen too. She faces 2 years of treatment but is very stoic about it and can see the bigger picture.
Hubby is going to cook today as it's my weekend off. We are going to have a healthy version of a cooked breakfast but for tea and I shall enjoy every bite. I went to a friends house last night for a dinner to send off her daughter who is going to live in Australia for a year. It was very emotional for all of us. I have known her since she was 3 years old and now she is 26 and a lovely lovely woman. I will really miss her but obviously not as much as her mum.
I think I have written an essay today!!
Hope you all have a lovely weekend whatever you are up to, take care xxx
  • Morning one and all. It's looking promising here for a change and no rain forecast Sadly the week looks downhill after today though. More rain and even sleet and light snow forecast.
As usual, yesterday was manic with the 3 DGDs. I really am getting too old for all the childminding. Promised them a day out before school back on Monday and of course there was a big argument between them all on what to do. Weather rubbish so decided on the Brewers Fayre with the Brewsters play area. Got there to find a one and half hour wait for a table!! Back in the car for a rethink. Eldest DGD eventually won the toss and we went to MacDonalds near Skipton. Busy busy but just managed the grab a table someone was leaving! The bonus was we paid a lot less than we would at Brewsters and, because I was so hungry by then, anything would have tasted good!!
There was some lasagne left in the fridge from the giant one I made Thursday, so that was warmed up for Mr TA and I for tea with some salad. So ended up a no cooking day.
Friday cleaning to do today as obviously didn't get done yesterday with having the girls all day. On the bright side, once they are back at school Monday we are just needed for tea, sleepovers and school runs when DD is working the next day, then the day is ours!
Have a good day all whatever you are up to. xx
  • good morning every one only a quick head around the door this morning as DD and I and tribe are all off to Norwich to see DGS Ben for the day.We will take him to a local pub and feed him up.I have lots of bits to take up with me food wise to keep him going until Easter. We hopefully will be able to see the house him and his pals have rented for the coming year in September. All the contracts are signed and everyone has paid their deposits.Five lads and one girl all sharing for the next two years sounds like a party or two may happen there. They are all nice kids though and I am pleased at how he settled in so well at Uni.
Well time to get the kettle on
have a good day everyone and keep warm if possible .
My eldest DGS Danny is off to NYC this morning working for his ccompany and there are icebergs in the Hudson River apparently as there is a big freeze in the north east of U.S. at the moment, hope he's packed warm clothes
    Cheers chums JackieO xxxx
  • Good morning Everyone,
We got up to a heavy frost this morning. DH is working until lunch time today so i am planning a quiet morning. I am just going to potter about with my daily jobs. I have defrosted some soup to feed DH at lunch as he works outside i think he will be glad of it today.
    Have a great day everyone
    regards
  • Morning everyone.
    Bright, sunny and brrrrrrrr here.
Yesterday did not pan out as expected at all. Drove up to Oban for a shopping trip and only a few miles down the road got a puncture. Cue me sitting in a layby for two hours waiting for recovery. Got taken back to Oban and then another long wait whilst the car was repaired. I decided to have all four tyres changed as the back two were close to change time and the front need to be the same. And then wheel alignment and wheel balancing. More boring and frustrating than anything else. Luckily I hadn't bought any frozen food.
The upside was that I met another customer who took me to The Original Factory shop which I didn't know was there. TA mentioned it in another thread so I was delighted to find it. What a lot of stuff they have.
OH arrived home just past midnight. . No idea what the plans are for today though I'm sure it'll start with bacon and egg rolls.
    Hope everyone enjoys their Saturday.
  • Morning all,
Beautiful day here there was a frost first thing which has all gone now but the sun is shining and there is a good breeze, I have the first load of washing in the machine and will hang it out today.
I treated myself to some new Egyptian cotton bedding which arrived yesterday so going to strip the bed and put the new on today, I will start getting a few good bits a month and slowly start to get rid on the cheap stuff, I am finding it really uncomfortable to sleep under / on as it wrinkles up and is not as warm so I shall slowly replace it.
DD at work today so she may be here tonight as we are a lot closer to work, not sure what's for dinner will go and look in the freezer after this.
    Have good days all xx
  • Morning, bright and sunny but brrrr the wind chill is something else. I will be staying in the warm.
Shopping done yesterday next shop on Wednesday at Aldi, my monthly stock up. It will be a bit expensive this time as I will need to buy some meat and a chicken.
Lie in this morning, its Saturday so no need to be up asnd about early.
  • Morning all,
What a morning ive had! I think I mentioned yesterday (or the day before) that I'd changed the Girls diet and it had upset one of their tummies. Well I woke up to a surprise this morning. A pile in the hall just in front of the front door and Youngest came in hammered and walked it up the stairs and into his bedroom.
Thank goodness for the carpet cleaner! It took ages to clean and disinfect but at least its done now. All hygienically clean now but it will be awhile before I feel like eating I think.
Food shopping hopefully this afternoon and ive got my Grandson overnight.
    Onwards and forwards,
    have a great day all.
  • Afternoon all,
Judi - Eughhh! Hope he didn't walk in it in bare feet then get into bed?
Had a flurry of snow about 8 this morning which thankfully has not turned into something heavier.
Done the Aldi shop. DH put the TV on the wall, not high up but just so it can be flush with the wall or pulled out. We put the old lounge furniture on the FB selling page asking if anyone wanted it for free, and couldn't believe how many people wanted it.
DH is cleaning the lounge carpet. We had some dents in the carpet where the old furniture sat and won't be covered by the new, so I tried the ice cube and the steam method, which worked to some degree. The underlay was squashed very flat and so we have cut bits out and repatched using new underlay. It's worked very well.
    Happy Saturday all
  • Afternoon all
We have a DGD here today, we collected her this morning & took her to Hobycraft, she chose some more loom bands & I bought a magazine.
We treated her to fish & chips for lunch and then we've made a stuffed owl since we got home.
Next it's a film & some popcorn & then bed.
    Have a good evening everyone.
    hugs Hester
  • Have just finished sewing one of two big window seats for DD's house.
Making roast veg and marinated chicken for tea with a few home made chips for DH.
Hospital visit on Thursday said DH's skin cancer has stopped growing and there is some improvement so very happy. Can't quite take in good news for change but very relieved and thankful.
Have two of DDs home as well as eldest so enjoying a fairly full house.
New photos taken of the house and a few details changed on Rightmove but quite relieved we have not had any viewers yet with DH having been so ill. Need to get my sensible head on and realise downsizing to a bungalow is the best thing for us in the next couple of years.
    Hugs to all.
  • Great news elona. XX
  • Brilliant news Elona. So pleased to hear your DH news regarding his fight with cancer.
My day was busy... as usual. The girls seem ok. No more accidents thankfully. My Grandson is tucked up in bed.
My daughter and her fianc! went to choose wedding rings today. Youngest and his girlfriend have had an argument and my oldest daughter has had a new tattoo. Oh dear its supposed to be a work of art. I'm not a fan. I haven't told her that though. I haven't lied either I told her it was very her.
  • Back home from our day out in Norwich and what a lovely day it was .Wet and nasty until we got into Essex, then as we travelled further up into Norfolk the weather although cold was sunny and dry.Arrived at lunchtime and we took Ben and his GF Katie out to lunch which was really nice in a pub by the river (and they didn't object to the two dogs who sat quietly under the table ) then we drove to Wroxham and hired a boat for an hour and had a short trip up river to Wroxham Broad and back. Katie (Ben's Gf) is a lovely lass and had never been on the Broads before so was really excited. We saw quite a few birds including several Herons. Then came back to UEA and got him some bits and pieces for his food stash and finally left to come hom around 6.
Just got in and Ben's GF has emailed me to say thank you for a lovely day.bless her its so nice when youngsters are polite. I was brought up to thank people and she obviously has been as well. Ben is lucky to not only find such a pretty lass, but one who is polite and well-mannered.She is doing bio-medicine and hopes to get into med-school eventually and become an oncologist.A thoroughly nice lass whom his Grandma approves of .Ben is a very lucky young man.
Right I'm off to make a cuppa, but no biscuits as I am abstaing from my ginger nuts for Lent a real hardship for a ginger nut like me
  • Just popped back to say Elona, glad your DH has had some good news
