A question about : Orange/EE Unlocking phone is it Free?

i have been out of contract with Orange/EE for 6 months but still pay for the contract on monthly contract until i know what i wish to do. I have been with them for over 20 years.

i asked for an unlock code last week i was told that i would have to pay for it, i thought that it would be free, after i finished the call a manager called me back asking me how the call went and agreed that i should get the code for free and this would take about 7 days via email. i just called now and the woman said that they should have asked for an imei code - NO ONE did and said that i would be charged.

I thought that there was a law change that you could get the phone unlocked for free after period of time?

Can someone advise what is the correct information.

• You'll probably get it unlocked faster and cheaper via an ebay 3rd party unlocker. Depends on the handset.
  Since the only purposes of getting the phone unlocked is to change networks, why do you think they would do it for free?
