A question about : oil heating use

Hi

we just move in to a 4 bed detached house and would like to know what a average oil usage would be as we kept the heating low and on timer but still go though 1000L in 4 weeks is this normal ?

many thanks for you help

  • Plenty of replies on the other thread and generally your quoted consumption looks very high even for a genuine Winter month. I'm intrigued that your almost identical post on that other thread specifies a different number of bedrooms although what's more important is the level of insulation of the house.
  • I live in a 2 bed house (semi detached) of brick/flint construction, the oil heating is on 24/7 from the start of November to April/May and my annual usage is about 900 litres. All year round the boiler also runs every morning to heat up the hot water.
My house internal temperature is 19c, during the winter months the boiler fires for about 5 mins every 1/2 hour or so.
The house also has a lot of glass, so if the sun is shining and strong enough then the heat generated through the glass can often mean the boiler does not run for several hours each day.
I have my 1200 litre tank filled up in October, and can get through to the following October on just the one fill.
  • We have 4 bed detached house with timber frame build in rural North scotland, so very cold winters, have two oil fills a year,(1,200litres)the fill end of November lasts as long as it lasts depending on how low temps are but I'd look at refilling about Feb though will be March this year, and the second fills lasts until Nov. I'd say your consumption is excessive. Our heating is not on low, it's 20 at all times and the oil heats our water.
  • 1000 l in a month seems very high for a relatively mild winter month even for a large uninsulated property.
Check the insulation - there may be funds available to provide free insulation in some cases, even if you aren't on a low income.
And if you are planning on being in the property for some years - get an air source heat pump or a biomass boiler. The government RHI payments could pay for the installation costs within 7 years, depending on what the calculated heat requirements are.
