A question about : Notice of Selection for Potential Jury Service

Hi

I got a note through the door to today, 'Notice of Selection for Potential Jury Service'

I already did Jury Service in 2011, and was surprised to see the letter. I thought there was a 5 year 'deferment period', so why they are potentially considering me again after only 4 years?

A present I'm unemployed (nearly 4 months.) I've not signed on, and have been trying to create a small business though it's not going to plan at this stage. Jury Service wouldn't be particularly helpful to my situation at the moment (last time I lost a whole week.)

Cheers

Best answers:

  • I think the length of time between serving is three years in England and two in Scotland
  • Thanks I will do some research into it on the web.

  • I have never done jury service and quite fancy it. Don't suppose I can do it for you?
  • I hope I am never called up. I am self employed & the main earner, I couldn't afford to take more than a day off work for it & the money they give you in place of earnings is a fraction of what I need to earn to support my family.
  • It's one of my worst nightmares to be called up for jury service. If it ever happens I shall reply asking to be excused on the grounds that I am racist, homophobic, hate all religions, want to bring back hanging, assume everyone is guilty until proven innocent, suffer from bouts of amnesia, cannot concentrate for more than five minutes at a time and my IBS makes me fart all day and could clear a court in 3 seconds flat!
Mind you I do remember reading on some forum that if you simply ignore the letter they don't bother to follow it up.
  • I think ex coppers were once prohibited from jury service but that's changed now.
Very occassionally me and the OH go to the public gallery of our local Crown Courts, it can make an interesting 'day out'.
  • I was 'called upon' in summer 2011, and of course found it highly disruptive to my employment.
This time I'm unemployed, with zero income, so of course the disruption factor is very significant - all I want and am worried about is to start earning again.
I phoned them this morning, and I am indeed eligible for selection again. All I can do is ask to be excused, and hope for the best.

  • I did it once. Having spent many hours in the jury debating room i came to the conclusion that some of the jury needed to be in the dock alongside the accused.
