A question about : Not sure where to spend my money

Hello, I have arthritis and depression through my doctors they've recommended that I join the local gym , all classes included& swimming for Ј20 per month , reduced from 28 a they have referred me .
Gym is 10 minute walk from my home .i work full time Mon - Fri
My local slimming group is roughly Ј20 if I attend and don't buy any extra books etc . That's 10 minutes the other way from home
I don't drive .
I have 1 wage a I live singly can't afford to join both.
I need to loose around 5 stone .
I'm really not sure where to use my Ј20 can you advice please ? Thank you

Best answers:

  • If I am reading right your doctor has recommended one of the two options which seems a sensible reason for choosing that one.
  • I'd say the gym is better. You have to watch your diet to lose weight but to keep it off you need exercise I'd say
  • You could it by yourself with out joining either and spend the Ј20 on treats for yourself like beauty treatments, hair done, new clothes when you have lost x amount of weight.
Both diet and exercise are equally important when trying to lose weight.
If the gp is monitoring you, you don't need to do the slimming class you can follow a healthy diet and weight yourself at home each week.
As for exercise why don't you use dvd's at home. There are some good ones out there I enjoy the 10 min solution series. You could buy 1 or 2 cheap from amazon, ebay, charity shops and sell them swap them when you get bored or look on you tube for free video's.
You can just go out walking, jogging and running out and about also free.
Good luck with your weight lose.
  • Exercise alone isn't going to lose weight, you'll still need to change your diet.
  • I would spend your money on the gym -
    a) you're getting a bargain at Ј20
    b) they have equipment that you won't have at home
    c) they have people who can help and guide you and keep you motivated
Although it would be nice to go to the slimming group as well, you probably know enough about what you should or shouldn't be eating to be able to go solo on this.
  • Firstly watch that recent Horizon program on loosing weight, everything you need to understand about dieting and sticking with it was in there.
I thought that program was great.

(i'm assuming you didn't see it, as it answers your question regarding exercise vs dieting for weight loss)
  • Exercise has other benefits than weight loss, the mental side of exercise is very underrated and can provide a massive boost to confidence.
Do you have a bike? If so find some quiet roads/paths near you and ride them build up your confidence and then start riding to and from work. The weight will fall off and you will save a fortune.
  • Join the gym and sign up to myfitnesspal.com and search the internet and get yourself informed on diet and nutrition - this is easier to do at home than motivate yourself to exercise with out the proper instruction and guidance, which you will get in a gym.
  • You might be able to get a gp referral to slimming world as well.
  • Plus theres a SW thread on here, not everyone goes to the group that posts.
