A question about : May I pick your brains?

Just a quick question and this genuinely is for a friend. She asked me but although I think it might be unreasonable I wasn't sure if she could do anything about it.

Friend lives a 30 minute drive from work and has a small child. Now being asked to come in for a regular staff meeting at 8 in the morning. This is difficult as childminder doesn't generally accept children before she'd have to leave. Plus she is concerned about an even earlier start and workload issues.

It's a salaried job not hourly paid so money doesn't come into it. It's in public service so generally workers go in just before the public (8.30 ish). Most staff meetings are held straight after work for an hour.

Sorry if this sounds a bit mysterious but don't want her to be identified.

What I wanted to know is whether there might be any discrimination issues for her as a carer or any other employment laws that might come into it.

TIA

Best answers:

  • There must be others affected by the 8 o'clock start so she needs to ask around. I'm sure any discussions with managers would be better done in numbers.
  • Could she phone in and take part by conference call?
  • Has she asked her childminder if she could cover this? They can generally be more flexible than nursery care. How often is the meeting? Will your friend get time off for the extra time needed to attend?
  • Interesting points. Thanks so much. It will all help her to think around the issue which is far better for negotiation.
