A question about : The New Money Diet

So what did you think of the new stuff. THere was a lot of it 100 pages worth. Did you notice? Any bits you liked or didn't like. I'd love feedback (gentle) from those who've read it title=Smile

  • I think it went into deeper depth than the first book Martin (which suits better as i found, the first book for me was just a refresher on paper) but this book is more than that, there is more meat for me to get my teeth into. I find both of your books easy to understand and in clearly understandable sections.
  • Only half way thru and didn't read the first version, but as a busy mum to a terrible 2 i found it really easy to read... read first 100 pages in one sitting which i never do...
Really looking forward to the rest of it, and to sharing the info with my friends - who are more than a little reluctant to take advice from a website, but if it's in a book it's a different matter!!! Lots of sound advice, just like the website...
well done you, will be recommending to all

  • Luvverly book, Martin, borrowed from the library your first book, but BOUGHT this one. Havn't read it as it's a Christmas present, so will borrow it back later. Actually bought it from Amazon, using part of the freebie voucher re credit card deal. Don't want you to think I go round BUYING things all the time. Bad habit.Cheers Big Ears.
  • Book is great, i'm looking forward to using the tips next year
  • I'm half way through the book and have to laugh as I can actually hear Martin saying some of the phrases I've heard time and time again on radio two. Ended up nipping back to Amazon so some friends and family members better watch out as Father Christmas is going to be putting them on a money diet.
  • I just love all those dieting phrases! I only got mine today and I dont usually BUY books but hopefully it will be classed as an investment! I just know I will enjoy it as its easy to digest. When books are stuffy and full of jargon they dont get read, which is why Ive never bough a money/finance book before, but after using this site I considered it a good idea.
  • I love the diet analogy too, having been in the past a yo-yo slimming dieter as well as a yo-yo money dieter. For that reason alone, the book is one of the most entertaining finance books I've ever looked at.
For me, the big way that money dieting is aking to slimming dieting is that at the start it feels like deprivation, but gradually the feeling of deprivation is replaced by a feeling of control and well-being and pride.
After years of eating Macdonalds and mars bars, it took a long time for a slimming diet including fruit and salads to feel like a pleasure, but gradually I started to find fruit as satisfying as chocolate and now it's become second nature and I can drive past a Macdonald's without a second glance.
In the same way I'm slowly I'm starting to get a 'taste' for money saving, and I'm hoping that if I keep up the effort, I'll soon find saving as pleasurable as spending and be able to pass by a department store or shoe shop without a second glance!!!!!
  • I've just bought the book - didn't read the first one - but love this to bits
It's so easy to understand. I'm finding it really useful
It's a shared investment for all the family. Anyone can borrow as long as I get it back!!!
  • ok so now i need to buy this book where's the best place?
  • Got the Money Saving Diet about a week ago. Left it on the table when my daughter was here and she told me she had been thumbing through it while I was out (that's why I left it in such a prominent place) She quoted bits to me (good, the message is getting through!). I love the little anectdotes and admire Martin's brass neck - asking for another £30 off an already-reduced item in John Lewis and getting it for a song. Don't know if I'm quite that bold but the book is so good I have ordered three copies for my grown up kids (daughter included) and on the strength of it have ordered them each a copy of the new 'Thrifty Ways for Modern Days' as well, plus one for myself. Probably the best Christmas present they will get from anyone, as everyone needs to learn how to make their cash go further. Especially my kids!
  • Hi I bought the new book for my DD for a Tree gift and she is delighted with it. She asked me which charity the proceeds were going to.I'm afarid I haven't a clue ,could you tell me as she said she is sure that you never answer questions put on the site ,but a minion would probably do it ? By the way I have been an OS since around 1950 odd so many habits have become second nature to me .Loved looking through it though before I wrapped it .
Happy New year Martin ,keep up the good work, I believe you read these posts .
Cheers JackiO your No. 1. fan

  • I bought the book after Christmas after I had seen it at a friend's house. Am still only half way through as I have discovered the website now which is so in-depth and up-to-date, especially with the chat forums for just about everything I never thought about before, but I am doing about two pages a day as a bedside reading. And I got the book for just £3.99 from Amazon, teehee.
  • Got the book through the post on Saturday morning, finished it last night.
Found it very easy to read and laughed at quite a few of the things in it (Particularly the part where the bank introduced the open an account for £1 - get £25 back offer but when the loophole was publicised by Martin they thought they would be clever and make the minimum amount to open the account £100 yet the same thing happened again)
Aiming to save quite a bit of money with the book and it introduced a lot of ideas that I would never have thought of (max'ing out a 0% credit card and getting the sticking the amount in a high interest savings account - brilliant)!
Going to try and convince my wife to read it, have recommended it to quite a few people at work (one for the cheaper holidays, one for general savings) and plan to get a copy for my parents and one for my sister too.
  • its the first book i red in 20 years lol it has helped me and my wife allready, she was paying 29% on her card, rung them up now only paying 12.9%, well worth the money, but keep getting odd looks off kids, as i said they never seen me read a book
  • I found the Money Diet cheap on ebay and as i've been a member here for yonks i just had to get it and i am actually really impressed, i thought that it wouldn't be much help as most things i have already acted upon on the information on this site....but infact i have found it really interesting and it just seems more in depth....though it seems quite overwhelming on where to start!!....will have to make the time to read it in more detail soon..... top stuff!!......
