A question about : Nationwide (merged)

hello all , this is my 1st post so hope i do ok , must say this site is BRILLIANT and i have already benefited by joining the holmes place health club via martins pruhealth loophole , anyway i am interested in reclaiming bank charges but want to know if anyone could shed some light on my problems, i recently went through a divorce and consequently got myself in around Ј20k of debt throught various loans, credit cards etc , this is now in hand with a fee free debt management company called PAYPLAN , i suggest anyone in desperate financial difficulties contacts them as they have brought me back from the dead , they are a charity and are financed by the financial industry opposed to a company trying to make a buck on the back of your crisis , i want to know if i would be able to get charges back for bounced direct debits, standing orders and interest charges , the banks in question were the nationwide and barclays , there were some months nationwide would charge me Ј250 + where i could not meet my direct debits/stdng orders , to be fair to them when i called them and questioned them etc they sometimes budged on a portion of the charges but they certainly made a small fortune on the back of my troubles. i have since closed the account but wondered what chance i would have of getting any monies back from them , any hel would be greatly appreciated . if anyone needs more info on payplan please contact me , would love to help someone else out with some free advice.

  • Hi jenkers
    Welcome to MSE.
You stand a very good chance of getting all your bank charges back for the last six years (even on closed accounts)
Your first move would be to send the first letter to each bank with a Ј10 cheque. This will ask them for your last six years bank statements/charges.
A template letter for this is on the the main article HERE
  • just finished typing letter and copying all my statements ready to take on Nationwide , one month they charged me Ј600 !!!! just for returning direct debits and standing orders . would like to know if anyone has challenged either Nationwide or Barclays
  • Hi. I have a Nationwide account. I had no overdraft facility but they honoured a direct debit, then charged me for it. Since then I have left the account unused but every month they send me a statement telling me they've charged me another load of money for having an unauthorised overdraft. The balance is now over Ј200 overdrawn, all because they decided to pay a direct debit, charge me for it, then continue to charge me because of this.
Can I claim any of that back? I know we can reclaim charges for returned s/o and d/d but what about general overdraft charges?
  • Thanks for the help. Having phoned Nationwide, I thought others might be interested to know their registered address for personal data requests is:
    Nationwide Building Society,
    Naitonwide House,
    Pipers Way
    Swindon
    SN38 1NW
  • I'm running four different cases for people (including one for the Nationwide). In every case, all the letters we have sent up to the court stage have been to the branch the person banks with. This works well.
If you check out THIS THREAD. The address you have been given is for the registered office of Nationwide. You only really need this address for the court papers (it's very important to issue the papers to the banks registered address).
The Data Protection Team for Nationwide are at one of their other offices. Check out the address thread (link above) for this stage.
  • I have just got my Son Ј850 back from this org. They take you nearly all the way . I had to put a claim to the Northampton small claims court . N/wide sent the form saying they would fight it & then the next day paid all monies asked for + Ј80 costs. Do it you have nothing to lose . Banks will only find other ways of fleecing you , so get them while you can.
They have closed the account now because I will not play to their T&C's ( a bit rich seeing has they are probably illegal ).
GOOD LUCK!! I will check the thread and try to assist you if required.
  • Can I just point out to users that links to CAG will not work as you have to be a registered user there to access the forums. It is certainly worth people signing up to CAG to be able to read the wealth of information there.
  • Im just in the process of writing my letter for 6 years statements with Nationwide, and today i received an e mail saying my bank refused to pay the Direct Debit which was Ј2.50 .I had Ј1.60 in the bank but the Direct Debit should not of been took out until the 1st of Dec,this was for my telephone calls .My benefits dont go in until 21st of Nov.Its only a basic account .I will have to go and put this money in tommorow incase the telephone company reproduce it again. Can i also claim this back when i send my formal letter in as they dont normaly take the money until the following month. They already owe me about Ј350 in charges they have taken out over the years.Im worried that if they close my account down i will find it hard to open another account which i can use for DD as my partner cannot open one as he was made Bankrupt last november due to unforseeen cicumstances.Any help would be appreciated.

  • Hi all
firstly id like to say a big hi to all, Martin & Radio2 have been a valuable source of important information.
Ok im trying to recover around Ј1300 in charges and interest from my building society they sent me a letter this morning,
The basic out line is as follows:
They thanked me for taking the time to get in touch and went on to say they are aware of speculation about fees and charges in the media and that the Office of fair trading has issued a directive regarding credit cards.
The second paragraph goes on to say that if they allow payment of unpaid DD and other items they make charges in accordance with the terms and conditions laid out when i signed up for the account and i signed an acceptance of these charges.
the third paragraph went on to say that the nationwide is open and transparent regarding its fees and openly include charges debited on all its statements and if i feel i cannot abide with the tariffs then it may be wise to open another account else where.
and lastly they said they are unable to refund my charges and give me a contact to discuss the matter.
Is this kind of letter what everyone else gets and if so can i now go to stage three a letter concerning court action?
i mentioned in the first letter that i have account records for two years but withold the right to claim for the five years, however that turns out to be six years and how do i get them to release that detail to me now ive written to them? it may be now they might refuse to give me the details i need to claim all amounts. I gave them the chance to settle for the two years i have records from but they are not even going to entertain that either.
so where do i stand now on this matter.
    Regards David from Luton
PS: it would be a good thing to be able to upload letters to this site so all can see the exact language used in replys from Banks ect, unless ive missed something you can only upload urls.
  • Welcome to MSE David, I'll just pop your post into the thread about Nationwide.
Did you send the DATA Protection letter with the Ј10 to ask for all your details and have they refused to give this?
  • From what I read from your post you said you reserved the right to go back further? If so I would start at the beginning with them now and send the Ј10 for all the information going back 6 years.
  • Hello
Am after a bit of information. Have now sent off both the 1st and 2nd letter templates to the Pipers Way address. Both were sent recorded delivery and are showing on the Royal Mail site as being received. They have responded to neither the original request nor the second letter sent 1 week ago.
Is this normal? Or have I sent the letters to the wrong address?
What should my next step be?
    Thanks in advance.
  • Hi there,
I'm also thinking of re-claiming my bank charges from nationwide. Having gone through all of my statements for the past 2-3 years (I've only had the account that long) I've realised they've charged me about Ј300. Ј340 if you include the interest.
My worry is though, it seems that some people have gotten their accounts closed due to them not willing to agree to the T&C of the account. As a student all my fees and rent payments go into and out from this account and I not sure whether i should wait until my next payment to give myself the chance to get everything sorted properly. I do also have my Natwest account (with no charges) but prefer having the 2 separate. I was thinking that if I had to move I'd go and apply for a A&L premier debit account.
So whilst I want to be able to get my money back, I don't want to lose my account and any credit that's in there.
