A question about : Nappy Cakes

I've decided to make a nappy cake for my sisters new baby (due november) but I need some help with how to make one.

How many nappies will I need? I want to make a big one, probably 3 tiers but don't have a clue title=Big

If anyone has any pics of ones they've done (so I can copy) that would be a great help!

  • Thanks for the links, I think I like the look of the ones where you can see the nappies better than the covered ones. I'm off to tesco to buy nappies tonight so have more of an idea of how many I need now.
  • do you really use wooden dowels???
  • Knew i'd seen this before on this site. Try looking at this post

  • i'd be mega chuffed if i was given this as a gift. such a wonderful and practical gift.
  • I made my first nappy cake in February for a colleagues baby and she was so chuffed with it. I only did one layer though, didn't feel confident enough to try several tiers. I will dig out the photo and post on here later for you.
  • Gems, https://www.craftbits.com/viewProject.do?projectID=1253 this might help has it has step by step instructions. You can adapt to suit the size you want.
  • I made a nappy cake for my nephews christening. It was three tiered and really easy to make.
I used a bottle to keep the bottom two tiers together and then just balanced the top tier on it. I bought a little teddy bear and used safety pins to secure it to the top. I also used safety pins to secure the ribbons on. I got some gorgeous little wooden embellishments from hobbycraft to add to the front of each tier and also bought some blue fabric butterflies which I stuck all around the cake.
I think I used about 25 size 4 nappies to make it.
  • I made a nappy cake yesterday for a expectant friend. Its unisex as we dont know yet and is due in next few weeks. Im being orgainsed!!!
I used boots size 2 nappies as they have a good yellow pattern i could use. i used 1 pack and a bit. At the bottom i used a plastic tray. The bottom tier is on top of a baby record book and then hidden amongst nappies are talc, soap, boidy spray, eye lifting cream(needed!), Hand cream. The top is a teddy which sits on a rolled up baby blanket. I got the ribbon and cellophane from a florist -much cheaper! - try to add a picture now, havnt done this bit before!
  • I've been reading your posts with interest and thought I'd have a go at making one of these nappy cakes. I haven't made it yet, but just wanted to say I went to Tescos today and bought up a load of the Johnsons products (100 extra points for 2 items as stated in the weekly email). What with that and some of the vouchers I had for my own baby for nappies etc, I've actually ended up getting everything I need for the "cake" and got more back in points (if I use the Tesco deals) than I spent! How great is that?!?! I just hope I can make it look as good as the picture above!
  • I made one for my sister when her son was born and she loved it , I spent a while gathering bits for it and used things like teethers, a baby hairbrush , nail clippers etc to decorate it with ,a baby bottle through the middle to keep it secure and filled the bottle with chocloates for mum. I have a picture but it ended up with another tier and looked fab wrapped in cellophane
I am going to be making another one in january for a very good freind who's baby i am expecting and plan to make this one extra special with a bottle of champagne in place of the baby bottle , .. after all they have been waiting 10 years for this.
  • Oh wow, that's beautiful! Here is my rather feeble attempt that I made this afternoon. I just hope they know it's supposed to be a cake otherwise it's a bit of a weird present!

  • I would like to make a friend one of these but she is using cloth nappies as I did and I wonder how they would roll?
Suppose the flat nappies would work fine but think she is having shaped ones
    hmmm?
    c x
  • Jane just had to say that is stunning!
  • After seeing all the lovely hampers and the great idea for a nappy cake, I decided to have a go. My daughters Guiders are both leaving to have babies, so I made a blue one first. It was a bit of a fiddle at first
I got the bottom circle cardboard free by asking at the fresh pizza counter at Asda. I explained what I was making and the assistant gave me 4 pizza bases for free!! How nice was that???
In the middle of the botton layer is a pack of wipes which stick out and I built the top tier around it too. Also put Johnsons baby soup (2) in the middle of the top tier. The ducks on the top were only £1.47 from Asda.
What do you think of my first attempt? For wrapping I have cellophane with little blue handprints on it and ribbon to make a big bow.
