A question about : Mobile Phone Scam

I have had a number of calls from Mobile Phone Companies telling me tat I can have a new phone when my one year contract is up.

Sometimes they say something like: 'Could we speak to the Orange Account holder?'.

I reply 'I am the Orange account holder'.

They then ask 'For security reasons could you please tell me your full name?'

I reply 'What is the name of the person you wish to speak to?'

They say 'We cannot tell you for Data Protection reasons'

I say 'What company are you calling from?'

They say 'This is your Orange upgrade department'

I say 'Yes, but what is the name of your company?'

They say 'For Data Protection reasons we can only tell that to the Orange account holder'

I say 'I am the Orange account holder'

They say 'What is your name?'

I say 'I am not prepared to tell you as I am not interested in your service, goodbye'

  • I've had a few of these, offering me an upgrade 'as you've been with Orange for one year' (which I haven't). Usually I give my standard line of "I'm sorry, I never agree to anything over the phone, when I'm ready for a new handset I will do my research and then decide".
The caller I got this morning was more persistent, he claimed to be calling from a company called 'Communicate' and claimed that 'we do the billing for Orange' (hmmm, I don't think so). He said 'If you can just confirm your postcode, I can make sure you don't receive calls like this again'. I gave the postcode to see what would happen next (there are 65 addresses with the same postcode as me so I wasn't giving much away). I could hear him typing the postcode into a computer, presumably an address finder, and he then said 'You're still at ********* Road then, can you confirm which number?'. I said, well if you work for the Orange billing department then you will already have my house number! He asked me again to confirm my house number, I said that I didn't give out my address over the phone and ended the call.
At no point during the conversation did he use my name or ask for my name. I'm guessing they probably wanted my address to send me reams of junk mail.
I've had several of these now and they usually call when I'm at work which is very irritating. Any idea how I can get them to stop? I'm wondering where they got my number - I got my phone from OneStopPhoneShop who I have to say were appalling - they reneged on a deal they had on their website, left it till just after it was too late for me to cancel the contract before they told me this, and their after sales service was dreadful - they told me outright lies and claimed to have no record of my calls > (Orange I have to say were very nice and sorted it all out for me). So it wouldn't surprise me if OneStopPhoneShop were selling on lists of numbers... but why not also names and addresses? Are these scammers just ringing numbers out of the blue that start with the Orange code?
