A question about : Mobile phone insurance

Hi there,

I have been looking through the forum and also the Phones and Insurance tabs for some guidance regarding reimbursement of mobile phone insurance, but nothing is jumping out at me.

I have a Halifax Ultimate Rewards Current Account which includes mobile phone cover. My mobile network provider is o2 and at the start of the contract (June 2013) they have been taking out Ј15 per month for insurance. I have dithered and dithered over the past few months about cancelling the separate insurance, and I have now bitten the bullet and just cancelled the direct debit on-line, but I am wondering if I would be entitled to claim back the full amount of what I have already paid, which would be from June 2013 until January 2015 (or any of it?)

Would anybody know?

  • You overlook you are in default of the policy, which most likely is an annual amount taken monthly. Seeking a refund for cover already provided depends on goodwill, and you do not get this by stopping payments. It is better to negotiate and see how they will treat your request - as you've not claimed, it might have been good.
    It looks as though you have preempted the situation and have simply had cover cancelled due to non payment. Having double insurance is wasteful but not illegal, and if you needed to claim, could have on a 50/50 basis from each. Why do you think a refund would be due?
  • Cancelling the direct debit doesn't end your contractual obligation, they will either reinstate it or mark you as in default - ring up O2 and cancel it quickly.
    Having 2 covers may be reason to refund if you ask nicely but they are in no way required to and may defend as their policy probably covers more than the Halifax one - I have that too
    Halifax has a Ј100 excess for iphones (Ј30 for others) which has to be paid on each claim and they don't cover damage if the phone works or if you have rooted your OS
