A question about : MBNA PPI success on a card taken out in 1991!

Hi and sorry if this is in the wrong place.

3 years ago I sent off my PPI claim to MBNA who, after a few months, turned me down. My card was initially taken out in 1991 and they sent me a copy of my application form stating I'd accepted to take out the PPI. As I chose the option I had no claim.

I then sent everything off to the Omudsman via email in July 2012. I heard nothing. I would ring up and get that message saying we are busy ..it could take up to 2 years etc., so left it. However after the 2 years I did call to speak to someone. They never received my email requesting they look at my claim; were very apologetic and I sent it all off again around August 2014. As they'd lost the original (I still had the email so just 'forwarded' it on again...so it had the 'sent' stamp) they got onto it very quickly.

I received a phone call and was asked a few questions to clarify a couple of things. At the time of taking out this card I was in full time employment with 12 months full pay if I was off sick. I was told I more or less had a claim. I have also been self employed since 2002 so could not claim 'redundancy'. Also though I did have a 0% interest deal for a while - and when I enquired about taking off the PPI when the deal was running out - I was told that if I kept it on I could have another 0% deal ..so I did keep it on.

To cut a long story above (shorter) I had a letter from the Ombudsman saying MBNA should put me back into the position I'd have been in if I hadn't taken out the policy.

I am now going to receive just over Ј5,400 from MBNA! (This is net after tax taken off for the interest). I have their letter confirming I'll get this in the next 28 days.

Persevere. title=Thanks,

  • was this a closed account? and if so, how long did you have the account for? I am in process of doing same.
I sent the standard letter requesting details of account, fees, charges and interest.
they replied with a very brief letter saying " Payment protection cover has never been applied to this account, therefore no premium charges have been applied".
should I persist and send the Ј10 dsar fee or is it too late?
    can anyone advise?
