A question about : many a mickle...

Many a mickle maks a muckle - or so they say - which is my plan for paying off the mortgage by dribs and drabs, no huge overpayments on this thread I'm afraidtitle=Embarrassment. After many years on the DFW board I felt it was time to graduate to MFW land in an attempt to stay focused and before new year just in case I get sucked into the sales!
Mortgage isn't huge, current balance is Ј47185 but I decided to become a student this year so income has dropped considerably. Income now made up with bits and pieces - bursaries and tax credits and I'm looking for a part time job that fits in around the studies.
In 2013 I am hoping to return to making extra money in all the ways I used to while attempting to get debt free - eb@y, cd sales etc. The flat needs decluttering on a massive sale and it's time to accept that all the pretty dresses I used to wear are now surplus to requirements so they can go… might keep a couple obviouslytitle=Wink… I need to cut down the grocery shopping too as I currently spend Ј40 for just me and DS but see lots of people managing on much less.
Anyhow I think that's enough for nowtitle=Big!

  • Hi Skint Spice,
Good luck!! I need to keep away from the sales too...I've thought about doing things to occupy ourselves over the next few weeks within the home (mainly at weekends) so we don't venture out and hit the stores...
  • Happy new diary Skinty.
I think you can save MASSIVELY on the first weeks groceries by sticking to the 'My sons chocolate stash' diet. I'll be on the red cabbage diet which will be healthier but may have interesting results!

  • Hello all, yes Christmas was fun Natty, lots of yummy sprouts for me . Hope you had fun too.
Crisps (did I mention I love crisps) I think the idea of fighting through the crowds is deterring me too, I still remember the Next sale in one of the Glasgow shops a few years back and shudder I have lost weight though so do need some trousers that stay up , hopefully my tops will be fine but this is the first time in years that size 10 jeans have been required
Sadly I'm not that fussed on chocolate Butti have been having a hankering for red cabbage cooked in red wine and balsamic but DS isn't that fussed so would be a bit of overkill for just me
  • OH, what a nice surprise, hello there pretty lady nice to see you
i agree with Butti, the chocolate stash should last atleast most of the year, you could always swap with some of butti's cabbage if you want some more vitamins,,, i imagine it would help with her "side effects" as well lol
all the best me dear will really enjoy following your journey, and i may be following you from dfw to mfw at some point
  • Hello SS and welcome, small OP's rock as you will discover on here .
  • Happy shiney new diary
  • Oh and to further explain...Sensible stuff!!! I have a large emergency fund which I'm not touching and no debts
I've overpaid in the past but H!lifax have kindly just adjusted the monthly payment down so I still finished at the original date, this is good as it means that my actual necessary outgoings are low but then doesn't force me to overpay either... currently on base rate and unlikely to be able to remortgage so hoping it stays low!
  • Welcome aboard, SS!
  • Hello SS. Will be watching and cheering you on. MM.
  • Ooooo a 2p overpayment ... I think I may start a wee challenge of that type myself
    Great ideas already skinty
  • Very good luck to you. Well done for combining overpaying and student life!
  • Many thanks for the warm welcome .
We've been to the bank today and put our Christmas money in - I've already bought a coat so will be putting some of my money towards the CC bill to cover that and I've decided the rest of it can go half to mortgage overpayment and half to "the bedroom fund" I've done most of this place up apart from the kitchen (which there is money put aside for in the summer) and my bedroom (no money put aside for) so I've decided to try and raise money for that by the summer. Can't do either now as they are too disruptive while studying - lesson learnt earlier this year... so I've spent lots of time on pinterest looking at ideas...
  • After reading your diary today I grabbed the whiskey bottle and emptied it ... Went for a wee walk up the street and put Ј3.60 into my account... Then transferred it to the mortgage ... Not sure when that will happen again but you spurred me on today ... Thanks me dear
  • Good for you El! DS has found another tenner in one of his bags so we're back to the bank tomorrow as he's desperate to get his savings up - my little money saver
  • Yay keep encouraging him ... Although of he still has that chocolate supply next October ... I am willing to sacrifice my services and help him use it all up before it goes out of date ... Something's should not be saved
  • erm El, you don't eat sugar remember!
The trouble with pinterest is that there are soooo many pictures of gorgeous places that I want to go to.... I am resisting travel websites honest!
