A question about : Low Carb Diet (atkins)

hi everyone

im on the atkins diet just coming up to the end of induction period of 14 days.Carbs was 20g or less per day.ive lost 9 pounds.
i would like to know what foods are low in carbs which i can eat,in the next phase where i can now increase the carb intake by 5g each week.
im also intersted in asian food (if allowed) like chapati's,naan etc.

also where in the uk can i purchase low carb food products from?

many thanks in advance.

Best answers:

  • I have been following this plan which I am told is similar to Atkins.
It got me down to my target in 20 weeks losing 2.25lbs each week without calorie, carb counting or exercise. I haven't bought any special low carb foods. I've just increased my intake of non starchy veg.
You will find this Active Low Carb Forum a good source of information. There is a special Atkins board and another UK board that will have folk who can answer your questions.
If you haven't listened to this Gary Taubes Berkley Talk it's worth devoting an hour or so to study. It made me buy his book The Diet Delusion and that led me cutting out those foods that raise insulin.
Study finds those eating low-fat diets with high insulin levels are most prone to weight gain
  • well done on your weightloss to date.. i have been doing atkins for over 4yrs now and lost a lot of weight on it, its now my natural way of eating
u should work your way up the OWL (ongoing weightloss) ladder of what foods to add to increase yr carbs by 5 a week see below
  • More salad and other vegetables
  • Fresh cheeses (as well as more aged cheese)
  • Nuts and Seeds
  • Berries, then melons
  • Dry wine (and other spirits low in carbs)
  • Legumes
  • Other Fruits
  • Starchy vegetables
  • Whole grains
  • the best place i find to purchase lowcarb foods is lowcarbmegastore but do bear in mind the more 'products' u eat the more likely it is that something will stall you so best to stick with fresh stuff for now
    good luck

  • I've stopped trying to lose weight now but it's still dropping but a bit slower than before. I've had a few bottles of red wine which don't help weight loss. The Danish pastries although very tasty were a disaster weight wise but it seemed to me it must have been just water they made me accumulate as it dropped off as quickly as it went on.
I've really taken to eating a lot of salad leaves each day. see YouTube - Salad Leaves for All Seasons with Charles Dowding I didn't exclude cheese or nuts or seeds so I've not had to reintroduce them.
I'm well into berries at the moment with Gooseberries Blackcurrants strawberries and raspberries in almost overwhelming quantities. So much better with lots of double cream.
The dry wine is still a bit of a problem as I find it a tad difficult to stop at 2 glasses and prefer to stop when the bottles empty but I'm working on it.
Legumes are on the menu next as the peas and beans are about ready for picking, Will see what effect it has on my weight next week.
I'm afraid I've already started on reintroducing bananas and grapes and they don't seem to have upset the plan so far.
I'm looking forward to eating Sweet Potatoes again so may give them a go if Lidl's are doing a half price veg offer tomorrow.
Whole grains _ I don't know if I dare yet. Perhaps I will start with some oats, then maybe some Rye Bread but after the Danish Pastries fiasco I don't think I'm ready for bread again (even wholegrain) just yet.
  • ted i never made it back to bread, starts up too many other cravings and carb creep.. i do however make a lowcarb bread which i freeze and have a slice every now and again
i also now make 'oopsies' which are made with cream cheese and eggs and make a sort of roll (sounds weird i know but google it).. if u cant find the recipe yell and i will find it for u if u are interested
  • oh yes i really liked that too... my son loved it and had no idea it was cauliflower
i recommend u try the oopsies i didnt for ages and now cook them every week
  • I live in Spain and have just had a blood test that shows...so I am still in shock
    Total Chloresterol 293
    LDL 175
    HDL 43
    But Triglycerides 370
I have been prescribed Statins but obviously need to change my eating habits, (at the moment home made food incl bread, no added sugars, no marg or butter, very little fried food, 20 mins exercise a day, non smoker but a glass of wine a day on average)
I've been scouring the internet over the weekend and have got thoroughly confused with diet info, some of which seems opposite to the diet sheet given to me by Dr.
My query is would Atkins diet help to lower my Triglycerides level (that's the one that concerns me). Any other info fromsomeone who has been in the same situation gratefully recieved either by PM or via this thread. I hope this post doesn't contravene 'no medical advice' rule
  • i am no expert but a friend and her husband both had high cholesterol and were on meds for it, after 6months on atkins both of them threw away they cholesterol meds
obviously on the face of it atkins contravenes all that convention tells u to eat to lower yr cholesterol but many people find that its actually helping them....i can only suggest u read as much as u can and make an informed decision on the basis of that
if yr diet now is not helping then maybe this change could... good luck with whatever u decide
gary taubes is brilliant.. not sure if u have seen this funny article of his

  • Feeding the masses on cheap carby food has always been a political matter.
Like the Irish potato famine, they were encouraged to move to Canada to grow wheat.
  • Just read James Dowd's blog, loved this quote .''Remember the "Yellowstone Park Rule of Thumb." Wild animals do not eat dairy but from their mother's breast as a yearling. Wild animals do not eat grain or legumes. Wild animals exercise every day. And, wild animals do not get high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease.''
Have done my Vit D calc and I need to get sunshine for 35 mins a day, very easyily done here on the coast of Spain
  • sazbo u can also use half and half flax to almond flour or even all almond flour and uc an add sweeteners to make it into a sort of cake,, there is also a recipe for a flax muffin
u have to try the pizza u will be amazed .. also try the oopsies that ted and i mentioned
  • the one minute muffin is scrummy .. i make it with almond flour as i am not a big fan of flax, i also use da vincis flavoured syrup instead of sweetener
the oopsies are in place of a bread roll, i have cheese rolls with them or u can use them like a burger bun.... some people have been making sweet dishes with them tho i havent tried any of those yet
  • oooh look and i didnt even realise lol.....what the heck have i wittered about on 1000 posts hehe
i have a list of lowcarb recipes to try too... i tend to try one every now and again some are keepers but quite a few i dont do again lol
